DURHAM, N.C. - Just a crazy day with the retirement of Arizona coach Lute Olson.
I spent the day trying to track down the story while also spending some time
with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and plenty of the guys at Duke.
Anyway, here's an interesting twist to the situation at Arizona.
According to sources close to the situation, Arizona associate coach Mike
Dunlap, who was hired a few months ago after two years as an NBA assistant
coach, is in a stalemate concerning taking over for Olson on an interim basis.
The word I'm getting is that Dunlap is threatening to leave if he doesn't get job
on a permanent basis.
The bottom line on this situation is that while Dunlap may be a terrific coach,
there's no reason for Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood to make a rash
decision and hire Dunlap when it's going to be a rebuilding process, anyway,
and he can make a legitimate run at someone such as Gonzaga's Mark Few or
Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon after the season.
