AKRON, Ohio - Jonny Flynn is a rarity. In a day and age when
everyone wants playing time, the Syracuse point guard actually wants fewer minutes.
Flynn played the entire game 14 times last season for a thin Syracuse club that suffered a pair of key injuries prior to
the season.
``You can't win in the Big East - or any level - with seven guys," Flynn said. "But
this year we'll have (Eric) Devendorf and (Andy) Rautins back and we'll also
have two freshman so there will be a lot more depth."
``If I'd say I wasn't tired last season, I'd be lying," he added. ``This year I'm
hoping to play about 33 minutes."
Flynn said he's taking some good-natured ribbing at the LeBron James Skills Academy because he's one of the few college players who didn't
play in the NCAA tournament last season.
``It hurts so bad," Flynn said. "You come in with the best class in the country
and there's so much hype. Everyone's talking about you and you go to the NIT.
Guys are killing me here and it's just making me hungrier."
Here are a couple interesting nuggets from Flynn, who has an impressive
perspective:
- His good friend and teammate, Paul Harris, actually received an extra invite
to the ABCD Camp back in the day and used it to get Flynn into the camp prior
to his sophomore year in high school.
- Flynn said he called a dejected Donte Greene after the former Syracuse forward slipped to the latter part of the first round
of the NBA Draft. ``I thought he might have gone a little higher, but how many people
get drafted?" Flynn said. "I told him to cherish the night. Sometimes
basketball players get a little spoiled."
