I miss Joey Dorsey already.
He's arguably the most quotable player to come through college basketball in
the last decade.
Think about it. Dorsey was responsible for the Associated Press chasing down a story that Michael Beasley was going to be taken No. 1 overall. The AP even went as far as to ask Bulls general manager John Paxson.
``I've got the inside," Dorsey laughed.
Obviously, the AP writer hasn't exactly been around Dorsey - or else he would have taken the comment for what it is - just Dorsey being Dorsey.
Instead, his comments actually resulted in the AP putting out a laughable story about Dorsey's claim.
Dorsey said he loves the fact that he's able to be offensive-minded at the NBA
Pre-Draft camp, unlike his tenure at Memphis.
``Coach (John) Calipari made me into a great defensive player," he said. "But I
was mad the first two years and was thinking about leaving."
Dorsey also said he was upset when he arrived in Orlando
and was given a copy of the rosters.
``I didn't see the Lopez brothers or anyone like that," Dorsey said. "I was
pissed. I came here to go against the best."
But Dorsey said he's hoping to get a crack at guys like Brook and Robin Lopez
in the next couple weeks when NBA teams bring in players to work out.
``They can't run from the workouts," Dorsey said.
But he's wrong. Agents, who have basically ruined the Pre-Draft Camp by
advising players on the first-round fringe not to play, will also tell their
clients not to go up against certain players in front of NBA teams because of
match-up problems.
- A thought from Dorsey on the championship game loss to Kansas.
``We were tired five minutes into the game," he said. "They kept subbing in two
more big guys and I knew we were in trouble."
- Danny Green injured his ankle playing pickup about three weeks ago. He said
he felt somewhere between 75 and 90 percent. Green also sounded upset that Roy
Williams didn't initially include him among the Big Three (Tyler Hanbsrough, Ty
Lawson, Wayne Ellington), when he was getting early reports from NBA executives
on where his players were projected.
- As much as anything, school just wasn't for USC's Davon Jefferson. Remember,
struggled to get into college and had to take correspondence courses just to
get into USC. ``I think it's time," said Jefferson, who has already signed with
an agent. "The college thing wasn't really for me. I could have done another
year, but it was time for me to move on."
- Jefferson's take on teammate O.J. Mayo and the recent
allegations that he took money from Rodney Guillory. ``We knew about the story before
it came out, so we weren't surprised at all," he said. "I don't think O.J. did
any of that. I don't believe (Louis Johnson). I can't believe he did all that
just for attention."
- Ohio State's
Jamar Butler pulled his hamstring in the final drill on Wednesday morning and
is out for the remainder of the camp.
COLLEGE COACHES IN THE CROWD: Kansas
coach Bill Self showed up on Wednesday night to watch his trio of Russell
Robinson, Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson. Both Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers
elected not to play, while Darrell Arthur was among those selected for the physical-only
process. Self was also joined by most of his staff - Kurtis Townsend, Danny
Manning and Ronnie Chalmers. ... Nebraska
coach Doc Salder was watching Aleks Maric and Alabama
head coach Mark Gottfried and his assistant, Philip Pearson, were there for Ron
Steele and Richard Hendrix. ... North Carolina's
Roy Williams was there to watch his trio of Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and
Danny Green. ... Plenty of assistants in the crowd - UConn's Pat Sellars, Iowa
State's T.J. Otzelberger, Virginia's Bill Courtney, Reggie Hanson (South
Florida), UCLA's duo of Scott Duncan and Donnie Daniels.
