Providence athletic director Bob Driscoll hasn't called me yet
for my opinion and he probably won't.
But if he does, my pick would be Florida associate head coach Larry Shyatt.
Shyatt, 57, knows what the Providence gig is all about. He was an assistant with the Friars
from 1989-94 under Rick Barnes.
He's also got Billy Donovan, Providence's favorite son, is his corner after helping to
orchestrate Florida's two national title runs in 2006-07.
Shyatt's record may not be eye-popping - he was 89-93 in five years at Clemson
and one at Wyoming - but he's got the experience, has a different perspective than when he was a head coach the last time around - and he would take the
job.
MARIST UPDATE
After Villanova associate coach Brett Gunning withdrew from the Marist opening,
it appears as though four candidates have emerged.
- Pittsburgh assistant and ex-Charleston head coach Tom Herrion
- Memphis assistant Chucky Martin
- Georgetown assistant Robert Burke
- St. Benedict's head coach Dan Hurley, a former Seton Hall assistant
RANDOM NOTES: Marquette signee Nick Williams has been granted a release from
his NLI. ... Want a wild-card for the Oklahoma State job? How about
Nebraska's Doc Sadler, whose pretty tight with Cowboys alum
Bill Self.
