    FINAL FOUR THOUGHTS

    Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 03:44 PM [General]

IN THE AIR EN ROUTE HOME TO BOSTON - It's always easy to second-doubt coaches.

    Everyone does it.

Let's get one thing straight. I was sitting about 10 feet away from Memphis coach John Calipari and clearly heard him instruct Chris Douglas-Roberts to foul Kansas at the end of regulation.

However, I was also baffled by the fact that he and his assistants weren't yelling instructions to the rest of the team. CDR heard it, but I'm fairly certain Derrick Rose never heard the marching orders.

Calipari probably should have called a time out so that his entire team was on the same page. But he probably didn't want to give Kansas a chance to set up for a final play.

Calipari said Rose attempted to foul Sherron Collins on the final play, but it wasn't a hard enough foul to warrant the refs blowing the whistle. I don't feel as though Rose was trying to commit the foul on the play; he was trying to defend the last-second shot and had his hand in Mario Chalmers' face on the 3-point shot that went down with 2.1 seconds left and forced overtime.

    The rest is history.

    COACHING CAROUSEL

    - We're hearing that Providence has attempted to try and lure former NBA and college coach Larry Brown, but it appears as a long-shot. The same sources tell us that the Friars administration is waiting to see how things shake out with UMass' Travis Ford and whether he's still in the mix at LSU.

    - As we mentioned, things could change down at LSU after the Tigers hired Duke athletic director Joe Alleva. It appears as though Ford is no longer the front-runner and names we're hearing now include Clemson's Oliver Purnell and Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt.

    - Some of the Marquette message board posters are reportedly up in arms over the promotion of Buzz Williams. The Texas native, who spent one year as the head coach at New Orleans before working for Tom Crean for the past season, is a self-admitted "grinder" who is a terrific recruiter and did a nice job in his one season at the helm at UNO. Remember, Crean's hiring wasn't exactly considered a home run when he was brought on, either.

    - If Oklahoma State doesn't get Bill Self (and my gut feeling says he'll remain in Lawrence), the Cowboys could make a push for Southern Illinois coach Chris Lowery - who would be the ideal choice. Some continue to speculate that Self's buddy and former assistant coach, Billy Gillispie, would be the next in line. However, sources maintain that the higher-ups may not want Gillispie because of his past drinking issues (remember, they already went through DUI's with Eddie Sutton).

RANDOM NOTES:  One source told me that LSU signee J'Mison "Bobo" Morgan, one of the elite big men in the country, could wind up being Kevin Love's replacement in the middle at UCLA. The Bruins recruited Morgan heavily before he chose the Tigers.
