SAN ANTONIO
- All is fairly quiet. The teams haven't arrived yet - and the mass influx of
college coaches hasn't touched down yet, either.
Tomorrow the Hyatt Regency will be a mass gathering of coaching rumors - and I'll
try and sort out fact from fiction.
For now, the fact is that Providence
couldn't get alum Jim Larranaga to leave George Mason. Most schools deny the
fact that they were spurned by a coach (i.e. Indiana), but Providence fully disclosed the fact that Larranaga turned down
their offer.
It was shocking, but impressive.
"Over the last several days it became public
knowledge that we were in discussions with George Mason Head Coach Jim
Larranaga about becoming our men's basketball coach," Providence AD Bob Driscoll
said. "We offered him a very substantial package but he was too
comfortable in his current situation and opted to stay at George Mason.
As a result, I will continue to have ongoing discussions with the other
finalists in this search. I remain very optimistic that we will find a head
coach who will embrace the rich tradition of Friar basketball and move the
program forward."
HILLTOPPERS HAVE TOP-TIER
LIST
Sources indicate that Texas assistant Ken McDonald and Florida assistant Larry Shyatt are two names at
or near the top of the list to replace Darrin Horn at Western Kentucky.
McDonald was an assistant coach at Western Kentucky in the Dennis Felton tenure and, according to sources,
will interview later this week.
VOLS LAND PRIZE
With all of the craziness that went on
yesterday surrounding Tom Crean leaving for Indiana, I forgot to write something on Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl and his staff landing
one of the elite remaining unsigned seniors in Scotty Hopson.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pound one-time Mississippi State commit decided to sign with the Vols
yesterday.
``My family and I felt like it was a great opportunity," Hopson told
FOXSports.com. "Look at what Coach Pearl has done with that program. I like the
staff and the players."
Hopson, who is a versatile wing that Scout.com's Dave Telep will rank in the
Top 10, also considered Mississippi State, Texas and Louisville.
RANDOM NOTES: Nebraska coach Doc Sadler inked a two-year
extension that will keep him at the school through 2014. ... In case you missed
it, Kent State elevated assistant Geno Ford to the head
spot. ... Leonard Washington has been cleared and will take summer classes at
USC.
