Stephen Curry is the real
deal.
He could play for anyone, anywhere. What I didn't realize is how impressive his
ball skills are. Everyone knows what he's able to do in terms of shooting the
ball from deep, but he is able to handle and has impressive court vision.
Certainly, he'll need to get stronger before he makes the jump to the next
level. However, this is a kid whose game will translate to the NBA because of
his versatility.
He just knows how to play and is so intelligent on the court.
I'll be doing my All-Americans next week once the Final Four is completed (I
think it makes sense to include the biggest games of the year) and Curry is
right there with Chris Douglas-Roberts for the top two-guard in the country.
LARANNAGA MEETS WITH PROVIDENCE
George Mason coach Jim Larannaga met with Providence president, Reverend Brian
J. Shanley, yesterday on Washington D.C. and the ex-Friar standout is the
frontrunner to replace Tim Welsh, according to sources close to the situation.
TOOTING THE HORN
We're hearing that South
Carolina will
name a new coach as early as Tuesday - Western Kentucky's Darrin Horn.
Horn would be the latest coach to parlay a Sweet 16 appearance into a jump to a
BCS job. It seemingly happens every year.
If Horn does wind up heading to the SEC, look for a couple names to emerge at Western Kentucky. Texas
assistant Ken McDonald, who was an assistant with the Hilltoppers under Dennis
Felton, will be in good shape. Kansas assistant Kurtis Townsend played at Western Kentucky and we're also hearing that Clem Haskins may push his
long-time friend, Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton.
NOT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT
As we said when Jim Christian left Kent State for TCU, don't be shocked if top
aide Geno Ford gets the full-time gig.
It's worked well at Kent State, handing the baton to the next guy. Christian won at
least 20 games six straight seasons after moving up when Stan Heath left.
INDIANA JOB HAS CONCERNS
We mentioned it yesterday and while Washington State coach Tony Bennett probably won't ever admit it, Indiana's current situation concerned him.
Sources indicate that Bennett also heard that three Indiana players failed drug tests this year. He was also
well-aware that this would be a rebuilding process since the Hoosiers will lose
D.J. White and likely Eric Gordon.
There may be more departures depending on what happens - Jordan Crawford and
Armon Bassett could opt to transfer - and the chances of Devin Ebanks ever
arriving on campus are slim at best.
