Now that Oklahoma's Jeff Capel is staying in the Midwest (he signed a two-year extension that puts him at six years),
the speculation will begin as to who goes to South Carolina - since all the speculation on who would succeed Dave
Odom centered around Capel.
According to sources, don't expect VCU's Anthony Grant to be in play.
One source close to the situation said that Western Kentucky's Darrin Horn will be in the mix - as will UMass head
man Travis Ford - who would prefer to get out of the northeast. Another name that is expected to be in play is Davidson's Bob McKillop.
- In addition to the suspects (Mike Montgomery, Randy Bennett) we tossed out
yesterday after Ben Braun was fired, don't be surprised if Bob Knight's name is
tossed around for the Cal job. Just think about what the Hall of Famer and
all-time winningest coach could do with a lineup of Ryan Anderson, Patrick
Christopher and Jerome Randle.
- FOXSports.com has learned that the Indiana brass met the other night and came out with a list of
heavy hitters that included Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Tom Izzo and Thad
Matta. It's tough to imagine any of those guys heading to Bloomington. The next tier may include Washington State's Tony Bennett and Xavier's Sean Miller. Vanderbilt's
Kevin Stallings could be in play because of his relationship with Indiana AD
Rick Greenspan.
- Travis Ford could also be in the mix at LSU - and for good reason. LSU's
president is John Lombardi, the former chancellor at UMass. Another name that
may not appear to fit is Tony Bennett, whose wife is from Baton Rouge, La.
- Candidates to replace Rodney Tention at Loyola Marymount include ex-UNLV
coach Bill Bayno (that's who the Pumps are pushing), USC assistant Gib Arnold, Cal State Fullerton's Bob Burton, former St. Louis coach Brad Soderberg, NBA assistant Mike Dunlap and Villanova assistant Brett
Gunning. The administration wants Mike Montgomery, but he declined.
- The Providence situation continues to be interesting. George Mason's
Jim Larranaga, Brown's Craig Robinson and Kent State's Jim Christian have all had preliminary contact with
the administration, according to multiple sources.
- Detroit assistant coach Kevin Mondro has a shot at keeping
the job permanently. Former head coaches Barry Hinson and Soderberg are in
the mix - and Michigan assistant Mike Jackson and Notre Dame assistant Gene
Cross have both drawn inquiries.
SCARLET KNIGHTS GO BIG
Forgot to mention that Rutgers beat out Duke for St. Benedict's (N.J.) 6-foot-9
space-eater junior Gregory Echenique earlier in the week. Yes, you read that
correctly. The Scarlet Knights legitimate beat Duke on a player.
This is huge for Rutgers coach Fred Hill and his staff - who also received a
verbal pledge from Blair Academy junior forward Austin Johnson on the same day.
Echenique is a force in the paint and a consensus Top 75 player who hails from Venezuela.
RANDOM NOTES: Here are the eight
players who will participate in the Three-Point Shootout next Thursday at the
Final Four - Jaycee Carroll (Utah State), Jamar Butler (Ohio State), Shan Foster (Vanderbilt), A.J. Graves (Butler), Chris Lofton (Tennessee), Derrick Low (Washington State), Drew Neitzel (Michigan State) and Brian Roberts (Dayton).
