LSU's John Brady was fired
for his inability to do his job. Jay John was let go at Oregon State for not being competent enough.
Why shouldn't Bob Donato and other referees across the country have the same
level of accountability?
Donato blew the whistle with 0.1 second left last night that cost Villanova a
chance to knock off Georgetown.
Donato, a veteran official, was working his third game in three nights. He did
the Providence-St. John's contest on Saturday afternoon, then flew to Cincinnati for a 12 p.m.
game between Xavier and Saint Joseph's before returning back to the northeast for the Villanova-Georgetown
game last night.
With the game tied at 55, Georgetown
guard Jonathan Wallace had the ball and was dribbling down the left sideline.
He wasn't in the act of shooting and was barely bumped along the sideline by
Villanova freshman Corey Stokes.
Donato blew the whistle.
Wallace went to the free throw line and hit a pair to give the Hoyas a 55-53
victory.
Now he should have his whistle taken away.
``He needs to go," said one Big East assistant coach. "It's embarrassing. He
should, at the very least, be docked games or fined."
This is the time of year when games mean the most and seemingly, it's also the
time of year when referees are worn down and make questionable calls.
``Why is it that they can continue to make mistakes and still walk off the
court and go to their next game," said one D-1 head coach.
Donato's call wasn't just questionable. It was downright putrid. You can't make
that call 75 feet away from the basket.
Jay Wright's team could have moved within one game of sixth place in the Big
East.
Donato took the opportunity away.
FIELDS MAY RETURN
There's a chance that Pittsburgh guard Levance Fields could return tonight against Providence.
Fields, who has been out since he broke his foot on Dec. 29, isn't expected to
log extensive minutes if he does wind up playing tonight.
Fields went through most of practice on Monday and it appears as though Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon and his staff would like to get him
at least a few minutes prior to Friday's game at Marquette.
LONGHORNS RETURN TO FORM
Earlier in the season, Rick Barnes' Texas team was winning because the Longhorns were getting
contributions from all five starters.
That's what happened again last night and Texas wound up knocking off Kansas at home.
Connor Atchley played his best game in a while, Justin Mason was terrific and
freshman Gary Johnson brought toughness and intensity. Johnson, who sat out the
first semester due to heart issues, played with a broken nose - and without a
mask.
BOBO BECOMES TOP TARGET
Look for LSU commit J'Mison Morgan to become one of the most sought-after
big men in the country.
Now that John Brady has been fired, the big Texas may opt to open his recruitment, according to sources
close to the situation.
Morgan was recruited by the likes of Kansas, UCLA, Kentucky and Alabama.
RANDOM NOTES: UConn big man Hasheem
Thabeet isn't nearly the same player he was earlier this season. The 7-foot-2
sophomore is playing with far more confidence and is a dominant force
defensively. ... In case you missed it, here is the link to Washington guard Tim Morris inbounds pass off the face of UCLA's
