The major question mark surrounding Lorenzo
Romar's Washington Huskies is at point guard this season despite the loss of
Spencer Hawes to the NBA after just one season.
Justin Dentmon has been up-and-down in his two seasons in Seattle and he didn't really have anyone to push him for
minutes - until freshman Venoy Overton was cleared by the NCAA on Tuesday.
The 6-foot Overton is a quick, tough local point guard who will fit in
perfectly in Romar's up-tempo style. He may not just give Dentmon a break; he
may eventually take his starting spot.
Jon Brockman and Quincy Pondexter are an impressive 1-2 punch with Brockman
getting his work done in the paint and Pondexter doing it on the wing. Freshman
forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning has the potential to become a star in the Pac-10,
but it'll be Dentmon and Overton that determine how successful the Huskies are
this season.
ORANGE PULL
I am not a big believer of promoting 15-year-olds, but Dion Waters has a chance
to be special.
The Philadelphia native, who has yet to play a high school game, is a
sophomore at South Kent (Conn.) and was the best player on a court loaded with D-1
prospects.
He's also already committed to Syracuse.
``It's the right place for me," said the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Waters, who is a
young version of Indiana freshman Eric "E.J. Gordon. "I'm sticking with my
commitment. No question."
Waters, who bounced between Bartram and Southern High as a freshman, has been
to the Syracuse elite camp for the last few years and he's also the
cousin of current Orangeman freshman guard Antonio "Scoop" Jardine.
RANDOM NOTES: South Kent
senior scoring guard Isaiah Thomas has a broken left ankle and has been out the
past month. He expects to be back on the court in the next week or two. ... Vanderbilt
got a commitment from 6-foot-8 Steve Tchiengang, a strong, skilled forward who
also considered Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Baylor. ... Dave Telep of Scout.com reports that
the consensus (and I use that term loosely) No. 1 player in the Class of 2008,
Greg Monroe, expects to narrow his list later this week. Look for Duke, Georgetown, LSU and probably Kansas to make the cut, according to sources close to the
situation.
