U.S. WINS THREE IN SERBIA
Led by future Kansas State forward Michael Beasley and Davidson freshman guard
Stephen Curry, the United States has swept all three pool play games at the U19 World
Championships in Serbia.
Beasley is averaging 15 points and five boards per game while Curry is putting
up 13.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest. Johnny Flynn (Syracuse) has been the team's top point guard while Arkansas freshman shooting guard Patrick Beverley is doing a
little bit of everything.
Other Notables:
Incoming Vanderbilt big man and Aussie Andrew Ogilvy went off in his first game
against Canada with 26 points and 18 boards. He's third in the
tournament in scoring (20.7 ppg). ``We're looking forward to getting him,"
Commodores coach Kevin Stallings said on Monday. "We feel like there's a lot to
work with."
Puerto Rico has been led by Florida State guard Josue Soto, who averaged 18 points per game. One
of the top rising seniors, Angel Garcia, averaged 13 points per game and was
watched by a few colleges - including Memphis.
Future Arizona Wildcat Emmanuel Negedu averaged 14.8 points and 8.3 rebounds
while his teammate, incoming Florida State 7-footer Solomon Alibi, was solid
(8.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg)
Incoming Texas freshman Dogus Balbay led Turkey in scoring at 12.3 points per
game and also averaged five assists and nearly five boards.
France's Nicolas Batum, considered one of the top European
prospects in next year's NBA Draft, averaged 12.3 points per game over the
first three games. He's long and is considered a big-time scorer. Victor Claver
of Spain, another intriguing prospect, averaged 24.3 points
and made 7-of-13 from long range.
Korea's Jin Soo Kim, who has spent the last two years at the South Kent School
(Conn.), averaged 13.7 points and 11 boards.
Devoe Joseph, a scoring guard from Canada, led his country with 18 points per contest and made
12 of 25 shots from long range.
NEW YORK TOUGHNESS
The Gauchos took on all comers at the Peach Jam - even themselves.
A couple days after a skirmish at McDonald's following a big win against the
Georgia Stars, the New York-based program went back home with both the under-17
and under-16 titles.
The bottom line is that the Gauchos always have tough, hard-nosed guards. A few
years ago it was the trio of Russell Robinson (Kansas), Sundiata Gaines (Georgia) and Ronald Ramon (Pittsburgh). This time it the backcourt foursome of Kemba Walker
(UConn), Jordan Theodore (Seton Hall) and unsigned guards Darryl Bryant and Chris
Fouch.

RUTGERS NABS BIG COMMIT
Not just in terms of sheer size, but Rutgers just landed its biggest commitment in the Fred Hill Era.
South Kent coach Raphael Chillious told FOXSports.com that the 6-foot-9, 265-pound rising senior - who is from New York - committed to the Scarlet Knights on Monday morning.
The biggest reason he chose Rutgers over Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and South Carolina was because of his lengthy relationship with Rutgers assistant Craig Carter.
RANDOM NOTES
Terrific job of Kentucky's Billy Gillispie getting Alex Legion and Patrick Patterson for this season and DeAndre Liggins in the Class of 2008, but we're still not sure what Gillispie was thinking after
taking 2010 commit K.C. Ross-Miller and Class of 2009 guard G.J. Vilarino. It's a coin flip whether Miller and Vilarino will ever play a game in Lexington since both are a long ways off from playing at that
level. ... Dayton assistant Bob Beyer returned to the NBA with the
Orlando Magic. ... Strange sight seeing former NBA player Walter McCarty on the
road as a Louisville assistant. ... Duke is still awaiting the results of
senior wing DeMarcus Nelson's injury on his left wrist that he suffered Thursday
at the Pan Am tryouts.
