    Patterson News Conference Laughable

    Wednesday, May 16, 2007, 01:23 PM [General]

Some people get it - and some don't.

The Patterson family just doesn't have a clue.

Patrick Patterson, the 11th-ranked player in the country, chose Kentucky over Florida and Duke at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Don't get me wrong. Patterson is a nice kid - and a nice player as well. He's soft-spoken, articulate and well-mannered.

However, when he stepped up to the table and finally made the announcement on the last day of the spring signing period, it must have slipped his mind to call Billy Donovan or Coach K.

Because neither coach was informed by anyone from the Patterson family prior to the rest of the world finding out. There's a good chance Coach K and Donovan had to watch the Internet viewing on WKYT 27.

I know it wasn't the first - and won't be the last time that a kid makes a huge announcement without informing the coaches that have recruited him for years. However, that doesn't make it the right thing to do.

Patterson put on the Kentucky hat at the beginning, but that was just the start. The poor kid didn't have a chance to speak until his mother, father and five other people had to take the microphone and utter a bunch of nonsense.

Remember, this is Patrick Patterson. He's a solid piece of Kentucky's rebuilding process. He'll be fortunate to ever step foot on an NBA court.

He's the only child of Tywanna and Buster Patterson, so he's used to getting all of the focus. I'm an only child, too, so I can relate.

Patrick said he was happy to have this over and done with, but if that were truly the case, he wouldn't have strung this thing out until the 11th-hour.

He and his family loved the attention. They became enthralled with the recruiting process and that's why they waited until everyone else had signed to get their day in the sun. They talked about the importance of relationships, but at the end of the day, they went with a coach that they have known for one month.

Patterson said the reason for choosing Kentucky came down to proximity. Lexington is only a couple hours from Huntington, West Va., and he wanted his friends and family see him play.

The bottom line is that The Patterson's wanted their son to remain in the spotlight - and Kentucky's rabid hoop fans far outnumber the football-crazed Gator diehards in Gainesville.

Patterson made the right choice. He and Kentucky will get along just fine - unless he doesn't live up to expectations.
