not sure why it seems like linemen are in such short supply this year - is the injury bug worse than usual or is everyone elses line play coming up the scale? think its probably a lil of both.

well what we know is. All bears fans have always wanted a quarterback. And Jay is great. But we should have went through the draft got a good lineman and a good linebacker and this season we could have went after a qb and a new DT, Now i am talking just about the first 2 rounds each year. Even if we did stink this year we could have at least looked forward to the draft. And I would have given 1 first rounder for Jay but not 2. But now we stink and we are talking about years of waiting for a decent draft pick. I also think we really made a big mistake losing Jones,I know Benson is good but i don't think he would hav ever performed well at least not exceptionally well for us but we will never know. This season i wanted James Larunitus and Ryan Clady. Those were my wish list for the first round. But I still think Tommie Harris is going tobe all right,he may be overated but still very good.

And Tommie Harris has been the most over-rated player in the league for the past four seasons, including the Super Bowl year.

nothing you can do on defense. They're a mediocre group as they stand now and this is as good as it gets. Angelo's misses on draft day is now catching up to them. When your team is a bunch of third, fourth and fifth round guys, that will catch up with you. Our starting linebackers are 2 undrafted free agents and a stud who happen to be third rounders. Our d-line is an aging D-end, a perenially injured and over rated DT, a third round pick and a free agent at the other DT and a late round pick at the other DE who is a nice guy but not a difference maker. Secondary is a CB who is coming off of multiple surgeries, a late round rookie safety, a safety who has never panned out to the level he was picked and a late round pick who is an injury concern and is a rookie essentially. and the two main backups are a late round safety who can't play the pass so they play him at FS and a CB who has had major surgery on his hips and groin and has lost all his flexibility. WHen this defense was good, it was solid up the middle with Tommie healthy, Urlacher healthy and Mike Brown healthy. When those guys got banged up, the D went downhill.
Angelo should be fired, Lovie should be fired (but he won't) and the scouting team should be revamped. I've commented in the past on Angelo's draft record and it's miserable. He has missed so often on first and second round picks that it's next to impossible to maintain a high level of success without those superstar players. Mid-round blue chip guys are very nice, but they're supposed to round out your starters not be your superstars.

What a mess we have right now. What do you think we can honestly do right now with this present situation to get us back into playing the kind of Defense we need to stop this fiasco. I'm not sure we can defend against anybody with Urlacher out and no secondary to speak of.I know Tommy Harris is gonna get critisized but we have to have him.

I wouldn't move Williams at this point. It would mess with his mechanics and it would take him at least 3-4 games to get comfortable over there. The T's haven't been bad and Pace has held his own as a pass blocker. Leave them where they are this year. The big problem is the interior and you only have one player that can go inside and that's Beekman. He's ok, not great, and they'll have to play him at LG. He's an upgrade over Omiyale, but that's not saying much. Beekman's a scrapper and a football player so he won't embarass anyone. They can't move Kreutz because of the whole leader/locker room BS they have. Garza has to stay where he is because they don't have anyone to replace him. Their only interior options are Louis and Raiola and not sure they're an upgrade.
I forgot about one other big problem with the running game and blocking- Greg Olson. He's a bad blocker. Moving him into the starting lineup had to be done but it hurt the blocking. Dez Clark is a very good run blocker and pass blocker. Olson is a liability and has been blown up a lot on blocks. Hopefully, they'll run more 2 TE looks now that Clark is back and get Clark blocking on the edge more.

You Heron,, WHy not try out Williams at LT and Put Oyimale at RT then put Beekman at the LG. No disrespect to O.Pace but why the hell not!! And good call on Forte maybe last season took a toll on him and lack of work in the pre season he is still trying to get his legs back!! Being from MD this tends to happen to Clinton Portis alot its not a good habit to get Forte into!!

I think it's a combination of both the o-line and Forte. Forte could be beat up after last year, the guy touched the ball 450+ times. He needed all off season to recover, pulled a hamstring and couldn't train and practice to the level he needed to. He looks like he's a lot older than 23 or whatever his age his. He looks like he's running with heavy legs. He still has his hips, watch him when he's breaking a run off outside or cutting back. He just doesn't have the explosion coming out of his cuts or when he squares up. The O-line can't drive block or move the d-line back. That's partly because you have 3 LT's playing on the line. Pace, Omiyale and Williams are all finesse guys. Pace is playing fine- Cutler's not getting killed because of him. Omiyale is completely out of position at LG. He can't pull, he can't trap and he can't seal a shorter/stronger player on the inside. Beekman is a stop gap at LG and plays better at that position because he's shorter and can play lower than Omiyale. Williams is built like an LT and should move back there next year. He's decent as an RT, but he can't move a guy off the line either. He's got good feet for a guy his size and blocks well in space actually. He's been the best blocker on screens and will do fine at the LT. Garza has been dependable, but not spectacular. Kreutz is done. He has looked god awful and can't bend over anymore. He's stiff, can't move in space and can't move the man over him. The reason the Bears struggle with 3-4 defenses is because Kreutz can't handle a big NT all by himself.
I'd like to see them move Beekman to LG, let Shaffer sniff some time at the RT and next year, in an uncapped year, try and get a solid LG and move Beekman permanently to the C position. They're soft, stiff and light on their interior. Not a good combo.
