ESPN – The New York Jets’ defenders are talking big for their Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots. Earlier this week, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins called this game the Jets’ “Super Bowl” and on Wednesday, free safety Kerry Rhodes said he wanted to “embarrass” the Patriots…”You go out from the first quarter on, from the first play on, and try to embarrass them,” Rhodes said, according to the New York Daily News. “Not just go out there and try to win, try to embarrass them. Try to make them feel bad when they leave here. We don’t want to just beat them. We want to send a message to them, ‘We’re not backing down from you and we expect to win this game, and it’s not going to be luck, it’s not going to be a mistake.’…We will hit him more than six times. I promise you that,” Rhodes said… Rhodes insisted the Jets “won’t play dirty” but that Brady will be vulnerable. “I’m sure if somebody is around his leg, or he feels pressure below, he’s not going to step into his throw… Any quarterback can be rattled… He’s one of the best, don’t get me wrong. That’s evident. Any quarterback, Peyton Manning, even if you get in his face, if you rattle the quarterback, you get pressure on the quarterback, any quarterback it is, he’s not going to be the same. Nobody…”
Well you certainly can’t argue with Kerry Rhodes’ logic. If the Jets come out Sunday and do what Rhodes says they’ll do, that will be embarrassing. I mean, not as embarrassing as having Kris Jenkins come out and say the second game of the regular season will be “like the Super Bowl” for the Jets. Or Rex Ryan sending out a voice mail message asking Jets fans to come out and make some noise like he’s a high school coach at a Booster’s Club pep rally asking the student body to come out for the game and give a little support to his kids who’ve worked so hard this year. It wouldn’t be as embarrassing as, say, being chosen the 4th worst team in history in the NFL’s all time power rankings. Or being left at the altar by the greatest coach of all time because he realized it was futile for him to ruin his career trying to turn around your accursed, dysfunctional franchise. Or as embarrassing as watching him take the braintrust of your coaching staff with him to Foxboro and winning three Super Bowls with them. Not to mention watching him take former Jets like Bobby Hamilton and Bryan Cox and turning them into champions. It’s more embarrassing too that your team hired the runt of his coaching litter and handing him the keys to the Jets kingdom only to realize after 3 lost seasons genius isn’t contagious. Or when Belichick snookered them into moving up into the draft to pick a worthless waste of space like DeWayne Ferguson because the NYJs were convinced the Pats were in love with the guy. And I’m sure the embarrassment was at an all time high when you had to sit back in the 2006 playoffs and watch a banged up, exhausted Pats team crack the Jets open like a walnut, 37-16. Though I guess you become used to embarrassment when your fans signature move is luring chicks and little kids down to the bottom of the stadium ramps so they can dump beer, spit and snot on them.
Yes, the Pats sure will be embarrassed if they lose Sunday. But they’ll never be as embarrassed as if they were a bunch of mouthy, useless trash-talking, chest-thumping losers playing for one of the most unsuccessful, moribund franchises in pro sports history who get all giddy because they won a game against a horrible Houston Texans team in September.
This is going to be great when Brady and Moss show these guys whos the boss. Freaking Jets and their fans. Bunch of Kunnttss.
