i'm a bit bias on this one but i'd have to go with John Madden:

guess from sheer numbers (.738) lombardi looks hard to beat - why you so high on (.672)brown bud? Cause he did so good for so long?

I don't think it's even a contest. Paul Brown was head & shoulders above the rest. The only question is who is the distant 2nd best ever.

Well ya hafta admit that in any other div he would have made it with cassel last year so i wont count against him for that. so many facets make a great coach tho - fo toughness i'd go with a ditka, for integrity or style i'd say landry an for pure entertainment value or just to hang out with i'd say madden since he seems like someone that wouldnt get too wound up if you had to laugh with him or at him.

With the best coaches in history article coming out recently from ESPN I wanted to know what you guys thought the best NFL coaches were. Just a thought first though.  ESPN put him high up and I know a lot of people like him but Bill Belichick has never even made the playoffs as a Coach without Tom Brady as his quarter back let alone winning super bowls. My list looks like this:

1. Vince Lombardi
2. George Halas
3. Bill Walsh
4. Paul Brown
5. Sid Gilmam
6. Steve Owen
7. Don Shula
8. Greasy Neale
9. George Allen
10. Tom Landry
