Add Mario Manningham (leg) and PK Lawrence Tynes (groin) to the injury list. They join
WR Steve Smith (knee), G Chris Snee (leg), CB Aaron Ross (leg), CB Corey Webster (hip), DT Fred Robbins (knee), DE Osi Umenyiora (knee), DT Chris Canty (hamstring), DT Rocky Bernard (hamstring), LB Michael Boley (hip/PUP), and DB DeAndre Wright (knee).

OL Cliff Louis (ankle) did individual drills only. WR Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) was back in action.

Kevin Boothe continues to fill in for Chris Snee at right guard while Sinorice Moss took Manningham’s spot.

EVENING  PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
* The defense just continued to roll along. LB Chase Blackburn leapt into the air and picked off a ball for another interception – the 23rd of camp -- on a pass by David Carr intended for TE Lee Vickers, this one deep in his own territory. We are simply amazed at how erratic Carr has been this camp, and this particular play looked like a rookie mistake.

* Dave Tollefson stuffed Danny Ware in the end zone for a safety. Tollefson has really picked up his game lately, as he no doubt feels the pressure with all the defensive talent at his position.

* Gorgeous deep pass by Eli Manning to Domenik Hixon on a post.  Hixon beat Terrell Thomas on the play and easily scored an 80-yard touchdown. Manning and Hixon are really starting to develop a rapport and you can just see that Manning is growing more and more comfortable with Hixon each time.

* Stoney Woodson, looking to get a leg up on his battle with DeAndre Wright, picked off a David Carr pass that was intended for Ramses Barden. Carr put a little too much mustard on the ball and it deflected off the receiver’s hands right to the defender.

* Rhett Bomar connected with Taye Biddle on a deep post in seven-on-seven drills. It was as nice of a ball as we’ve seen Bomar throw so far.

* Not the best of nights for Kevin Dockery, who working with the ones, was abused so many times that we’re amazed that he didn’t throw up the white flag. Dockery is an excellent nickel back, but his smallish size is definitely not something he has in his favor and it’s  big (pun intended) reason why we think Terrell Thomas ,might jump ahead of him on the depth chart at nickel – that is if he doesn’t take a starting spot from Aaron Ross, who’s also struggled this camp so far.

* Wow, nice job by David Carr to find Ramses Barden deep along the sideline. We really, really like what we’ve seen from Barden so far.

* FB Madison Hedgecock, who got into a physical brawl with LB Bryan Kehl, this time verbally mixed it up with S Michael Johnson during a goal line drill, and we’re sure they weren’t exchanging pleasantries. We’re sure the two teammates will get a good laugh about whatever it was they were jawing about during meetings tonight. It’s funny because Hedgecock is actually one of the most accommodating and pleasant Giants when it comes to signing autographs – the guy will literally stand there and sign for every person if time permits. On the field though, he turns into a ferocious individual who is someone we wouldn’t want to run into as we value our health!

* Nice job by the offense to score on two goal line situations. The first play was a soft toss to TE Kevin Boss, who used his height to keep the ball away from a defender. The second, a hard charge to the right by rookie RB André Brown, who made up for the previous play when he was denied on a straight ahead run (in fairness, the line didn’t push the pile, though the rookie certainly tried to!)

* TE Darcy Johnson gutted out a thigh injury and looked no worse for the wear running a pattern over the middle. A couple of times it looked like Johnson wasn’t going to make it through the practice, but give the young man credit for sticking it out as he’s knee-deep in a battle for the #3 tight end spot with Mike Matthews and Lee Vickers.

* Yes, we had our customary bad snap from backup center Adam Koets. Not to sound like a broken record, but at what point are the coaches going to say enough’s enough?

ADDITIONAL NOTES
With the battle for the third quarterback still lingering on – neither Rhett Bomar or André Woodson have pulled ahead of the other though certainly by the end of the four preseason games one would think that the dust would settle at this position – head coach Tom Coughlin was asked earlier today if he might consider going with just two quarterbacks, like the team did last year.

“It’s always an option. There’s nothing we’ve decided on just yet, but we did it last year. It’ll come down to how well these two young guys play in the preseason.”

It’s not going to happen. The reason the Giants went with two quarterbacks last year is that they had to carry an extra kicker. This year, unless injuries warrant such a drastic move, the Giants will carry three quarterbacks, and we still think that when the dust settles, it will be Bomar, who based on his overall body of work has looked better than Woodson.

“The thing that’s so important right there is that every snap is critical because there’s only so many,” Coughlin said. “Woodson has done some good things and so has Bomar, he’s done a good job, too. But it’s been inconsistent, and that’s probably what we have to see. Now they’ll have some more opportunities in game situations.”

The other day we mentioned a brand new web site, footballplaybookonline.com that allows you to draw up football plays (and is something we are hoping to incorporate into our coverage this year thanks to the generosity of the site owner. Anyway, we received an e-mail today with a special introductory offer exclusive for Inside Football readers who wish to draw up their own plays. It’s IF_Intro and it’s good for a one-month premium pass.

TOMORROW
One practice session scheduled, at 2:35 p.m. We’re counting down to the preseason opener on Monday – the team will work twice on Friday and once on Saturday. They’ll have Sunday off (meetings only), play Carolina in a nationally televised game Monday night, and then have next Tuesday off.

Also coming up, Pat Traina has some insight on the Giants’ new plans for H-back Travis Beckum. Pat also has a comprehensive game preview coming by the weekend. If you missed Pat’s earlier player features, she did a good write up on the Giants’ running backs, particularly the relationship between halfback Brandon Jacobs and full back Madison Hedgecock. And here’s the link to yesterday’s very insightful Q&A with PK Lawrence Tynes.

Getting creative along the defensive front

Wondering how the Giants are going to get all their defensive linemen on the field this season? Well, apparently defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan has come up with one creative way. He lined them up in a 5-1-5 alignment at practice today, with DE Justin Tuck as the nose tackle, Jay Alford and Barry Cofield flanking him at tackle, and Mathias Kiwanuka and Osi Umenyiora at the ends.

“And there’s more to come,” Coughlin said. “Guys that are not practicing are part of the package too.”

The idea, Coughlin said, is to use “different alignments to try to create some issues for people.” And apparently Sheridan has many more ideas.

“With Osi back it’ll give us even more flexibility,” Couglin said. “That’s just getting started.”

I wouldn't say drop off the new DC runs the same style as Spags. The play book is not gonna change Sheridan just has to get his new players to understand the book & terms & we should be fine.
