George Steinbrenner’s checkbook just won a championship. That’s not a loser’s lament; just a simple statement of fact. And honestly, I don’t begrudge the Yankees for it. When you play in a city of 8.6 million people and manage to fleece the taxpayers to build you a billion dollar ballpark in the middle of a crippling economic collapse, you should spend 0 million to buy yourself a championship. It’s the least you can do. And I’m not by any means diminishing what they accomplished. I don’t care if a team buys a championship, steals it, cheats to get it or pulls out a miracle win. Winning is all that matters. You can put a footnote on the Commissioner’s Trophy or an asterisk on the Lomabardi, a French accent on the Stanley Cup or an upside down question mark on Copa Mundial, they all still look the same as every other team’s trophies.

But one thing this does prove is that given an unlimited payroll, anyone can win a championship. Which wouldn’t be such a huge revelation but for the fact that for 16 years, we kept hearing out of the Bronx that the reason the Yankees won was due to Joe Torre’s unparalleled leadership, his bottomless well of class and his uncompromising dignity. So what do the Yankee ballwashers say now that an empty uniform like Joe Girardi just won a championship. A guy who before coming to the Bronx managed one year in the bigs before getting summarily fired? The Steinbrenner family wanted to prove the point that given the unlimited budget they gave Torre, anyone can and should win a championship and they proved their point. It’s exactly analogous to what Jerry Jones did in the early 90s. He got sick of hearing what a genius Jimmy Johnson was so brought in a laughable buffoon like Barry Switzer in to replace him and won a Super Bowl. Look, Girardi got the job done and no one can take the ring off his finger. But what does this say to all the New Yorkers who groveled at Torre’s feet all these years? Who sold us this bill of goods that Torre was a genius, his example brought peace and love to the world and his tears cured cancer? The Suzyn Waldman’s who wept openly when he left New York? It says that either the Yankees found their second god-like manager in a row, or any monkey can win with a 0 million team, and I know what my money is on.

I would have no problem with say 150 million cap but there should also be mandatory spending cap so these slug owners don't keep the cash.

I as a fan do not want my team keeping all the profits, there has to be a scale in which the haves and have not’s can live in harmony with out picking the pockets of the haves weakening their teams just in the name of good sportsmanship.

If you told Microsoft that it was unfair and they should through Apple a few hundred Million a year for good measure it would sound crazy.

To get this done there would have to be a pay cap and the Baseball AZZ is never going to go for it, the genie is out of the bottle !

Thanks for printing this article I needed something to wipe my @Zz with.

Maybe they should write an article how none of the MLB teams lost money while collecting luxury tax money. How about how 9 different teams have won in the last 9 years despite payroll.

These owners are pulling the whool over the fans eyes, The Yankees are the only tema doing what is right and that is putting money back in the product!

You have some valid points .. lesser team owners are feasting from the luxury tax of large merchandising teams like the Yankees
