Mark has always said that he wanted to coach in the majors.I think hitting coach is just a front to get his feet wet.I'm a huge fan regardless of all the steroid talk.Face it he never was the kind of guy you look to for anything other than home run advice. If he does come back he will be expected to come clean about substance abuse.I think he should.I also think most players were juiced so who cares anyways. But thats an argument not even worth having anymore.Everyone just come clean so sports writers are forced to deal with HOF questions for an entire generation of players. They will forget as soon as everyone is guilty. The game is greater than any one player or any one generation of players.Play Ball!

ESPN baseball analyst Buster Olney has reported that Tony LaRussa is about to agree to a multi-year contract to remain manager of the Cardinals.  However, he also reported that a source said that Hal McRae is being fired as hitting coach and Mark McGwire will replace him.

ST. LOUIS -- Tony La Russa is returning to the St. Louis Cardinals as manager on a multiyear contract, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney, but there will be at least one change to his coaching staff.

Sources said Hal McRae, the team's hitting coach, has been fired. Mark McGwire, the former Cardinals slugger, will replace him, a source told ESPN's Kelly Naqi.

The 65-year-old La Russa has been mulling his future since the NL Central champion Cardinals were swept in the division series by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Oct. 10. His two-year, .5 million contract expires at the end of the month.

"We're getting closer," La Russa, who has managed the team for 14 years, said earlier Sunday. "But nothing has been decided. I can't tell you anything yet."

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch quoted sources that believed a formal announcement that La Russa would be returning could be made early in the week.

Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak have both said they'd like La Russa to return. He's led the Cardinals to eight postseason appearances and a 2006 World Series title, and he's third on the career victories list, trailing only Connie Mack and John McGraw.
