JP needs to GO! JP has spent the past few years with his head lodged inside of his rectum and has done nothing to improve this team. If and when the Jays can be a viable force against Boston or NY, JP will have been nothing but a bad memory.
Here's what else needs to be done:
1- We need a REAL closer. Scott Downs should never have been removed from his set-up role. Neither should have Jason Frasor. I know that switch to closer had to have hurt Downs' trade value. The Jays could try a young hard-thrower like Josh Roenicke in that role, give Jeremy Accardo (30 saves a couple of years ago) another try, or convert someone from that logjam of starting prospects. Personally, I think that David Purcey has the build and the velocity to be another Tom Henke. He stinks as a starter but he has the stuff to be lights-out for one inning.
2- Trade Vernon Wells NOW for anything. The Cubs, for example, have a glut of overpaid and untalented outfielders and might be interested. He is TOO comfortable and will never be any good again. Watching him try to hit home runs is unpleasant. An 8-digit earning clean-up hitter should NOT only have 62 RBI at the tail-end of the season. He is overpaid and has NO power or motivation to earn that check or to win, for that matter. Also, trade Lyle Overbay, the most unproductive first baseman in the league, for anything. That guy, if he were even to be in the starting line-up, would be batting 9th on any other team (maybe clean-up for the Mets, but that's it). At this stage, all he is a pinch-hitter and a defensive replacement on a National League club.
3- Stop playing games and LET DOC GO. Have some respect for the man and trade him to a contender. JP is a moron and really dropped the ball on this one. Only during mid-season is someone willing to overpay for an ace starter in high quality prospects. He should have taken either Boston's or Philadelphia's offers. What will probably happen now is that Doc will win 16-20 games in '10 and sign elsewhere and the Jays will get NOTHING in return. JP should be dangled from a tree and beaten like a pinata for screwing up this one.
4- The whole middle bullpen can go, starting with Brandon League. There are also some valuable trading chips in there, such as middle-inning workhorses like Shawn Camp and Jesse Carlson. Both have underachieved but there are contending teams with horrible bullpens (like the Braves, Red Sox, and Rockies) that would gladly overpay for one or both of those guys. Also, Brian Tallet has proven himself to be a valuable swing-man. He, too, should be dealt while his value is still high. He would be great on a contending team with young starters held to strict limited workloads (Yankees with Joba or the Phillies with Happ). The whole bullpen underperformed this year and should be replenished with prospects.
5- Don't even re-sign Marco Scutaro or Rod Barajas. Barajas is TOO old to be a starting catcher and Scutaro, at 34, will never match this year's shocking numbers again. The Jays need to go younger at these positions. They have the pitching to deal for younger replacements. Guys like Jose Bautista should not be playing everyday. Also, Edwin Encarnacion is a bust waiting to happen. He should be traded too, for anything, even a carton of cigarettes.
6- There are too many starters, a good problem to have. Some of them should be dealt to organizations hungry for pitching in exchange for offense. There's no reason why guys like Brett Cecil, Brad Mills, or Scott Richmond couldn't be traded for prospect position players. Also, when it can be proven that Jesse Litsch, Shaun Marcum, and Dustin McGowan are healthy, their trade value should be assessed.
Unfortunately, none of this can happen with JP as general manager. Its been proven that JP could not even manage a supermarket. He should never be given another front office job in baseball ever again, at any level. He is an embarrassment to both the Blue Jays organization and to whatever fans the team has left.
