There is a certain luck in the Rockies' run, and it has to do with the teams that they drew and when they drew them.
The Cubs and the Rockies were the only reasonably balanced teams in the playoffs, The Phillies couldn't pitch, and in the short best of 3, pitching is king. I'm not so sure the Rox sweep a best of 4 with that team -- one game or another their offense is going to take over, and it is better than Colorado's.
The Diamondbacks couldn't hit consistently, and in a best of 7, you'd better be able to do that. Frankly the D-Backs had several opportunutues where some timely hitting would have given them some wins, but they just don't have those one or two go-to guys who are going to give them the best chance to get the key hit. And they were the recipients of an insane amount of luck to be where they were too (anyone who doubts that can check their pythag)
And the Cubs, the only team of the three that was likely to be any kind of threat to the Rockies with its explosive offense and veteran pitching, exited in the first round against the D-backs thanks to repeated struggles in their bullpen.
So the Rox, as a well-constructed and balanced team, rolled easily over 2 horribly constructed and unbalanced teams. O'Dowd won those two postseason series in March, it was just a question of whether it'd be a sweep or not.
But O'Dowd met his master against Epstein, who's done this for a long time and been far more successful at it than he, in a market that's actually smaller than Denver's if you take a second to look at it, and a team at least as well-constructed as his with more resources to work with in the construction.
Still, I have to say the Colorado Rockies definitely had a shot. 2 of those games, if not 3, were winnable for Colorado.
I think not being able to get more run support for Ubaldo against Schilling, Oki and Papelbon was what killed the Rockies in the series.
Still and all, no shame AT ALL in being the NL Champs even if it does mean your last memories of the Rockies for the year are sad ones. The Rockies and their fans should be nothing but proud of themselves.
