On Lisa's "test" post she informed us that we were 59 days away from College Football season. Most of us College Football fans agreed with the sentiment that 59 days is a long way off. Too long for most of us. And now we got to deal with Utah Senator Orrin Hatch calling for the Justice Department to investigate the BCS for violation of "antitrust laws." ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME??? HERE WE FREAKIN' GO AGAIN!!! The 59 days just got a lot longer. Whats up Orrin...not enough things to do in the Senate now-a-days?
First of all let me say that I'm all for a playoff system in College Football. I haven't been a big supporter of it in the past but the last few years have weakened me. The thing is that I don't see a playoff format being developed without seriously jeopardizing the regular season. You would have to shorten the regular season significantly to put in a playoff system. Sports like the NHL and the NBA and MLB are almost comical in how almost unimportant the regular season is. To spice up interest they have basically delved deeper into the team pools and created a couple of more rounds of playoffs in these sports. So, what ends up happening is that we have the Stanley Cup playoffs going on deep into June...the NBA going as long as that if not longer...and MLB plays 162 regular season games before their playoffs start...and then we have the World Series in October...when it is generally cold outside...and in some cases sleeting and snowing during the ball game. I enjoy the hell out of College Football's Regular Season. I don't want it shortened at all. Now, if they could get a playoff format put together that would have them playing during the month between the end of the regular season and the bowl season...then so be it. OOOPS! Then that isn't fair to all of the other non-BCS bowls...is it? All of these leagues running over into each other creates a...kind of...conflict...of...interest...for the sports dollar...doesn't it? Let's investigate...oh, well... anyway...I digress!
So Senator Hatch wants the Justice Department to investigate the BCS. And this would happen as soon as they finish investigating other sports issues instead of investigating things that really matter...like...domestic terrorism...or...stuff...like...that! Why not, I guess! You know it only follows. Our new President is doing voice overs for Disney rides, commenting on Michael Jackson's death and his importance in our world and trying his best to "reach out" to all of those countries that don't like us much. His wife is becoming the greatest fashion plate First Lady since Jackie O. So if Hatch needs this to be done I would guess Obama would support him. I wonder how we are viewed in other countries when our political leaders are calling for our government organizations to investigate our sports organizations. I wouldn't take us very seriously. I mean...after all...the judicial system isn't finished with MLB and steroids yet! Bonds hasn't been to trial yet...Clemens is...who knows what the hell Roger is doing...Big Mac still won't say anything and Selig just lost his dance partner...Donald Fehr...to retirement. By the time the Justice Department gets through all of these investigations and jumps on the BCS for Senator Hatch...the BCS may be moot anyway! Hell...the way things are going...a lot of things we know and love may be moot! So...Senator Hatch...quit wasting time on the BCS and get something done for all the people in this country...not just the ones who complain about the BCS! And maybe try to re-focus your peers into doing the same thing. I know...like what should we try to do about North Korea aiming missles at Hawaii and firing off 7 of them...as a little test! Let's pamper them but get all over the BCS...shall we?Hey... the BCS may be good for the economy. People need to work those bowl games. Eh, whatever!
ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME? See where Fox Sports writer Jason Whitlock said it like it is...and ripped the recently murdered Steve McNair for being a poor father. I think that somewhere in his ramble he made the point that being their for your kids when they need you is crucial...to which I agree very much. But when lumping all of us into the male behavior machine I think he spoke a bit...well...generally...to which he offends the hell out of me. So...HERE WE FREAKIN' GO AGAIN!!! The following are direct quotes from Whitlock's article.
As for the life-experience, station-in-life disparity between a retired millionaire quarterback and a Dave & Buster's waitress, well, let he who has never Captained cast the first hoe.
Every man I know has a little Captain in him. We see a pretty young thang working her way through nursing or cosmetology school and it's just in our nature to pay a cellphone bill, a car note or get her nails done.
It's what we do. And if you've earned a chunk of change in professional sports or in corporate America, you might buy a big black Escalade in her name, fly her to Vegas or go parasailing over the ocean.
So, Jason...I've never paid someone else's cell phone bill, or car note, or got her nails done...unless the person I was doing those things for was...my wife...one of my daughters...or one of my grand-daughters. So...while I may agree with the final assessment of Whitlock on McNair and his parenting skills...or lack of them...I'm glad I ain't one of Whitlock's running dogs...one of the "every man he knows" kind of guy!
And here is another quality little post from JW on Serena Williams. Jason wants her to get into shape and become a monster of the Womens Tennis circuit. She could own the world ala Tiger Woods...Roger Federer...Margaret Court...Martina Navratilova...etc., etc. If only she would concentrate on her tennis and not her diet. ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME? Why does everyone need to be the greatest ever? The following are some of his comments on Serena.
She's chosen to smother some of it in an unsightly layer of thick, muscled blubber, a byproduct of her unwillingness to commit to a training regimen and diet that would have her at the top of her game year-round.
Serena simply isn't obsessed with tennis perfection. She seems to play the game solely because she's good at it. Not because she has a burning desire to be the best there ever was. That is her right.
He then mentions that it is his right to rip her for not being a tennis assassin. What is it that gives him that right? Again...ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME??? HERE WE FREAKIN' GO AGAIN!!! If Serena Williams wants to concentrate solely on Grand Slams and not get it together for the rest of the tournaments...who should really give a crap! Hey...Jason...maybe she doesn't want all the crap that comes from being the very best every week of her life. Look at the circus that follows Tiger Woods around. Look at all of the people who rip him for not doing enough for Black America. Maybe she doesn't want to be the "role model" (overused and totally unnecessary responsibility) for every little girl who plays tennis...or any other sport for that matter. Who are you to put those responsibilities on her? At the end of the day...she will answer to herself on how she lived her life and what she accomplished. She won't answer to you as I suspect not many people do anyway. Maybe that is why you feel the need to put all of the responsibility of living a life she may not want to live on her. Personally...in this world of once you get to the top...you become someone's target...I can appreciate her for doing it the way she wants to do it. I'm guessing you are feeling cheated by not being able to rip her enough after she gets to the top...all the time. And as we guage our "sports heroes" by how they performed in the greatest of events with the greatest challenges...she should be able to talk all she wants about her 11 Grand Slam titles and being ranked #2 in the world behind someone who...ain't...quite...there...yet! And that's the bottom line!!!
BOOMER SOONER!!!

My granddaughter's tease me about being old and then their friends are like...He's your Grandpa...NO WAY!!! I laugh and tell them I won't like any of their boyfriends...just like I didn't like their dads. Fotunately, though...one of the dads stuck around. The other one is still in the picture...he just ain't allowed at gcoach's house. It is what it is. Thanks for the visit and the request. I'll be back home Saturday and hopefully have a post put together shortly after that.
