The Sanctity of Opening Day Basbeall

Thursday, April 2, 2009, 12:53 AM PST [MLB]

There's nothing quite like opening day baseball. There is a feeling of change that comes with it because we feel summer is close as everything is blooming from the spring. The feeling is almost like a rebirth of sorts where we reflect back to all the great moments our grandfathers and fathers passed on to us, and in turn where we can pass onto our children.

Just walking into that ballpark on opening day with all the scents and smells of opening day baseball makes the wait from October all the worthwhile. You can smell the red clay dirt, and its aroma is nothing like any of the dirt we played in as kids, no, It's a sweet symphony of flavor that is unmatched by any other smell. Only in Baseball!

Then as the spring breeze gently blows by, you get that scent of fresh cut grass with each sun beaten blade giving off its own unmistakable mark. Yes, that is baseball grass! There isn't anything like it in the world, no matter where you go. Baseball grass comes from the heavens and is produced solely for our cathedrals of the game. There is no finer garden than a Major League Baseball field on opening day.

So here we go again, another year getting ready to start again, and the year does start with baseball, as Julius Caesar would have done it himself with our calendar if he could witness such a spectacle. Who wouldn't like watching opponents with two master strategists maneuvering their squads likes ponds on a chess game until one breaks the others concentration, matching wits and mind games against one another?

Whether it's manager vs. manager, pitcher vs. hitter, pitcher and catcher vs. base runner, there is always something going on in baseball that makes it the very best game ever invented.

America's game has kicked off the season with some great moments that we'll always cherish and will stand the test of time unlike any other sport there is. He's a compilation of some of the greater moments in opening day history. And if you can't get to the park this Monday, take some time either with your kids, niece, or nephews, turn on the TV and watch baseball. Keep the greatness that it is important and alive in us all for generations to come.
