I've lived through 10,000,000 heartbreaking losses in my day. I'm from Philadelphia, I was forged in a molten steel crucible of sports futility. The first Phillies game I ever went to was the 1st home game of the infamous 10 game collapse in 1964 that cost the Phightin's the pennant and I've only recently forgiven Cincy's Chico Ruiz for stealing home to beat Art Mahaffey in that game. But today is the last straw.
It isn't the sad fact Penn State waffled the Temple Owls today, either, it's the poor sportsmanship exhibited by Paterno when he let the frustration of another commonplace occurrence, Penn State having a stink-ass season, overwhelm his sense of sportsmanship, and not even call from his Happy Valley Rec room and say 25-0 or 35-0 is plenty boys. Paterno couldn't be bothered. Beatin
g Temple 47-0 is like punching your Grandmother after she's passed out and bleeding from both nostrils.
What kind of man is Paterno? Sure he was worried about the game. Temple at 1-10 is almost having a perfect season while Penn State at 7-4 is all over the road.
Paterno managed to give a pep talk over a speakerphone but apparently forgot to say, Temple couldn't beat you guys with a 58 minute & 21 point headstart, instead he said "Good luck guys, I love you" which is coachspeak for "I want them whacked and their mascot too."
Penn State's Tony Hunt scored not one but two game winning touchdowns in the first six minutes. By halftime Penn State led 31-0 (or 31 to Temple as alumni like to say), while Penn State's 2nd through 7th string managed to notch 16 unanswered points in the second half to finish the hapless Hooters off and all but end Temple's chances at a BCS or Bowl berth.
"I'd have to dig pretty deep..."
Temple coach Al Golden on what it would take to find something positive to say about the catcrap awful loss.
Even though he gave his pep talk in person Golden watched his team give up 21 points to the Nittany's on their first three possessions. After that he curled into a fetal ball and sucked his thumb until groundskeepers assured him the stadium was empty.
