Florida has put it's imprint on the national championship and history.
Two. Not bad.
Two in a row is even better, in some senses.
Good luck with three.
Duke has three. Plus a lot of Final Fours...
That all said, the best championship programs of all time are UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana, UNC and Kansas.
And I have a strong sense that Kelvin Sampson is licking his chops with the rest of us Hoosiers to add to the list of five banners in Assembly Hall.
Bloomington. Indiana.
There is that other one a few hours away in Illinois.
They came close, but they didn't have a Bloomington native named Sean May on their team. He's the son of Scott May, former All-American who won the NCAA with Bob Knight's first champs the year of the bicentennial. This was, to this date, the last undefeated champion team in Division 1 college basketball.
Sean May opted for North Carolina, land of Michael Jordan and 8 deep pro teams.
No, Chapel Hill capitalized there.
As they did in 1993 with a seven footer named Eric Montross from Lawrence North in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Maybe Tar Heel has some connection in meaning to "taking the best big men" from the Hooosier state.
Almost like Ohio State did last year with two Indianapolis wunderkinds...Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jr.
But now we got a few in Bloomington.
1940.
1953.
1976.
1981.
1987.
2008? We shall see.
The sixth banner awaits, like the bowl the IU football team will earn for the first time since the early 90s.
Hoosiers.
Cats.
Jayhawks.
Heels.
Bruins.
Blue Devils and Gators be damned. Well, cursed anyway...
(And is it me, or is there only one team that doesn't have blue in it up there?)
