THE WORST SPORTSWRITER GETTING PAID ON THE INTERNET: CHARLEY ROSEN (WILT CHAMBERLAIN HYPROCISY) PART TWO

Monday, November 13, 2006, 04:25 PM EST [NBA Charley Rosen, Lakers, Kob]

If Charley Rosen is to be believed there have are no great players in the NBA today because nobody is Wilt. True enough. Nobody is. But Rosen has been around long enough to know this is a hypocritical statement of the first order. Here's why.

    During Wilt''s monster Statistical years.............................

Wilt was allowed to raise both elbows and swing them clearing out space around him like a double bladed sycthe being swung by the biggest man on the planet. Imagine Shaq or Hakeem or even Fortsen being allowed to do this. People went down under Wilts elbows like wheat under a harvester.

Wilt, in his legendary best year was allowed to leap from the free throw line on free throw shots and dunk the ball. The rule was changed after that seaon. Imagine if you will Kobe or Lebron shooting free throws this way. What would their % be? 100%?

Rosen loves to talk about Wilt's assists "for a big man". Well OK, but since the lane was a foot narrower, Wilt was tallker than anyone defending him and he was allowed to clear out any defender with those elbows, it stands to reason his vision was far more unimpared at seeing the guy diving into the lane unguarded or even the spot up guy out 15 feet unguarded. I suspect any center in the NBA that had those advantages would assist a heap more.

And of course during Wilts spectacular statistical God like years the average power forward was a good 7 inches shorter than Wilt and generally a thick legged atrociously slow white guy with the vertical leap of a quadrapeligic turtle. So much for the athletic double teaming PF's that almost any big man of today faces.

When it comes of both offensive scoring and defensive rebounding Wilt had an advantage no player of today has. He was allowed to take the ball off the rim. No offensive goaltending, no defensive goaltending. I myself saw Wilt take teammates shots out of mid air before they had a chance to reach the rim and simply stuff them in. I fail how to see how Rosen didn't see it.

And if you think MJ got ref's calls while be allowed to manhandle the person he was guarding you haven't seen anything when it comes to the way refs because blind and mute when it came to Wilt. Vision a WWE match where the ref " doesn't see" a wrestler "punching" the daylights out of his opponent. Now envision it for real and make it Wilt in the NBA. Bingo.

During Wilt's heyday the number of  teams in the league was barely a third of today and nobody traveled west of the Mississppi. Think that doesn't have anything to do with it? Think again.

For all of Rosen's labeling players of today as selfish and arrogant, during Wilts lifetime, much less his monster years, there was no player more selfish and arrogant than Wilt. None today come close and for Rosen to laud Chamberlain and vindictivally carry a grudge against a modern player is hyprocisy beyond the call of duty. ANY duty, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.

Was Wilt the dominant player of his time? Of course he was. Was he a hall of famer? Of course he was. Was he the best that ever played? Impossible to know for the very reason's I have documented. Is he someone for Rosen to hold up as a shining example of what players should be like today? Absolutely not since nobody will ever again be afforded the luxury of the swinging elbows if for no other reason. And there are plenty of other reasons.

Charley Rosen? You are a hypocrite sir.
