Just for fun, what are your favorite memories from sporting events you've attended? Here are some of mine:
Seeing Dizzy Dean, Stan Musial, Frankie Frisch, Ducky Medwick and Enos Slaughter play in an old Timers game in Atlanta then watching Hank Aaron play for the Braves against the Astros....having the priviledge (which I sincerely mean) of seeing Jim Wynn, Joe Morgan, and Cesar Cedeno at their prime wearing the "orange crush" uniforms...going to my first baseball game in an old run down stadium in Norfolk and getting the autograph of organized baseball's first non-white manager Hector Lopez...the epic 1999 game 5 double overtime battle between the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins....seeing Wayne Gretzsky waiting behind the opposing goal as every eye in the place watched expecting greatness....the fear Mario LeMieux inspired in opposing defensemen who played back for fear he'd get by them....watching from yards away as T.A. McClendon of NC State was stopped twice at the goal in the greatest State-Carolina battle of all time...Sammy Sosa hitting batting practice home runs out of sight at the Marlins stadium as thousands of Latin fans waved the flag of the Domican Republic....Sitting through so many rain delays one night in Pittsburgh that fewer than 200 fans were left in the stands.....so few that you could hear the players laughing as drunken college students chanted Melvin....Melvin as Melvin Nieves tried to bat...then having the parking lot lights cut off before we could get back to the car....walking off the Metro in DC and getting courtside seats from a scalper to see Kevin Garnett prove why he's the NBA's best front court player....wishing Michael Jordan would sit down in the owner's box at that game because evey time he stood up the fans in front of me would stop watching the game and turn around to watch Jordan....Seeing Navy's finest quarterback since Roger Staubach, Chris McCoy decimate Wake Forest in the Deacons homecoming game...Saying hello to Lefty Drisell as he and his wife were coming out of an alumni event before a Duke football game....Wes Parker telling me that old timers who had seen him and Hal Chase play thought Parker was the best first baseman of all time.....meeting David Thompson in line at a bar-b-que joint....watching Thompson launch himself high above the rim, higher than Jordan ever flew, at the old Big Four tournament....watching as Julius Erving took off at the top of the key and threw down a thunderous dunk for the New Jersey Nets.....seeing Kerry Collins hung in effigy at a Carolina Panthers game when he played for the Saints....and on my next trip back to that stadium seeing a 5'8" 160 pound place kicker run for his life on a direct snap to cinch a win for Boston College in something called a Continental Tire Bowl....hearing a drunk yell "steal home, steal home" and then seeing a Braves minor leaguer do just that to beat the home town Greensboro Hornets.....watching Derek Jeter, Andy Petite, and Jorge Posada in the minors...driving over horrible roads to get to the Opequon Cannons home field to watch a young Durham Bulls shortstop everyone was raving about named Chipper Jones....watching Wade Boggs storm off the field in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last exhibition game their inaugural year after Durham fans laughed when he misplayed a foul ball.....and seeing Boggs before a game in Baltimore later that year hitting line drive after line drive in batting practice with the most perfect swing I've ever seen....and watching as Rafael Palmero and Barry Bonds became the first 500 HR hitters to connect in the same game at Camden Yards..seeing "The Vet" and Busch Stadium before they were taken down......and laughing with the Pittsburgh Pirates players at "Meet the Pirates Night" before a Pirates-Reds game...and being a fifteen year old scorekeeper for his high school basketball team who ended up doing color commentary on a radio broadcast of the State 3A championships....which started 9 more years in radio and innumerable fond memories.
