This past offseason Lovie Smith would assume the play calling role from then D-Coordinator Bob Babich. Bears fan around the world would rejoice in this move. Bob Babich would be the most maligned assistant head coach since the great John Schoop. Lovie Smith was a very good coordinator before becoming Bears head Coach. With the additions of Lovie Smith as the Play caller and Rod Marinelli, the Bears defense would be much improved.
Coach Smith would go even farther in saying the Bears weakness last season was coaching and not players.
On this Sunday, the weakness for the Bears was the WHOLE DEFENSIVE SIDE of the ball. The Arizona Cardinals in the first half would score on all 5 of their possessions (4TD’s and 1 field goal). Kurt Warner would throw 4 TD's in the first half. The Cardinals rushing total would over 100 yards in the first half. Warner's totals for the game would be 22/32 261 yards and 5 TD. He had a QB rating of 132.9.
WHATEVER the Bears were doing on defense, was not working!! Lovie Smith has been accused of not making good in game adjustments. His inability to make adjustments really showed today. The Bears blitzes packages are the same for every team they play it seems. The Bears cannot get pressure with their front four. The whole premise of the BEARS 2 is to get pressure with the FRONT four. If the front four get pressure, then the secondary does not have to cover for as long. This seems simple in theory.
However , without pressure, a good NFL corner, Charles Tillman, back cannot lock up Larry Fitzgerald. Poor Charles Tillman didnt even get safety help over the top. How is Charles Tillman supposed to cover Larry Fitzgerald without any safety help and no pressure on Kurt Warner. The answer is... HE COULDN't. Charles Tillman was put in a difficult position.
Who was to blame for this loss??
It was not the maligned offensive line, or the average Ron Turner, and it was CERTAINLY not JAY CUTLER. IT was LOVIE SMITH AND HIS DEFENSE!!
