    Keith 12322's blogger competition - And the Winner is

    Tuesday, December 11, 2007, 11:58 AM EST [General]

    {A loud announcer's voice rings out on the public address system}

    "Now presenting the MVP Award for the week 14 game between the San Diego Chargers and the Tennessee Titans, ESPN's Stuart Scott,"

    {Crowd cheers}  {Stuart Scott stands at the microphone}

     "And the winner is... ELI MANNING!"

    {Crowd turns and stares at each other, dumbfounded}

     "Since Eli couldn't be here in person to accept this award, San Diego Charger GM,  A. J. Smith would like to say a few words in his honor."

    {A. J. Smith takes the podium and turns to face the left side of the audience}

    "Eli, If it weren't for your snubbing of us when we tried to draft you, we never would have gotten Nate Kaeding with New York's third round selection in 2004.  Nate was the one who first got us on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a field goal and added two extra points later in the game for us.  His clutch PAT at the end of regulation is the one that sent us into overtime."

    {He then turns to address the other side of the audience}

    "Eli, if it weren't for you we would have never gotten Shawn Merriman with the Giant's first round pick last year.  He was a monster in the first half wasn't he?  He played less than two quarters and already had 5 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 QB hurries before he got hurt.  He's the reason Tennessee didn't score any more than they did in the first half.  He almost single-handedly kept us in the game even though we were floundering on offense. And boy didn't he put a hurtin' on Vince Young?  Vince came back in the game, but I'm sure he was still feeling some of those hits in the 4th quarter when he was throwing all of those incompletions.  Again, thanks for Shawn."

    {Now he faces center with his head slightly raised and a noticeable tear in his eye}

    "And finally Eli; thanks for Philip Rivers.  Without your disrespect for us, we would never have gotten to see what this kid was really made of.  What a gritty performance it was too!  He never could find a rhythm in the first half and was helped off the field with an injury.  He came back in the second half on a patched up knee, though.  He hobbled around and led his team down the field for four scores - one field goal and two TD passes in regulation and eventually the winning TD in overtime; grimacing in pain the whole time.  Even when one of his fellow players disrespected him on the sideline, he still threw the ball to him 5 times for 27 yards and a TD and got the ball in his hands for 146 rushing yards including the winning TD in overtime."

    "That players name..." {He looks quizzically}, "oh yeah...LaDanian Tomlinson. We thought about giving the award to him, but decided that you really deserved it more.  I'm sorry I can't give you any credit for LT.  We, as an organization, have to take the credit for him being here.  It was, especially in retrospect, one of my better personnel moves when I passed over Michael Vick in the draft in order to pick Tomlinson.  I'll have to remember to send Atlanta a thank you note."

    {He raises his wine glass in a toast}

    "So, here's to you Eli Manning.  I, on behalf of San Diego fans everywhere and the entire Charger organization, would like to congratulate you for winning this award and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your contributions to our team."

    {Crowd cheers wildly}

    {LaDanian Tomlinson and Philip Rivers now get up from their seats on opposite sides of the auditorium, hug in the hall, profess their affection for each other as teammates and try to convince Stuart "Carlton Banks" Scott that there was never a problem between them on the sidelines Sunday}

    Grow up Samari Rolle

    Tuesday, December 11, 2007, 05:07 AM EST [General]

    During the game between Baltimore and New England a flag was thrown and Rolle compained to official Phil McKinnely.  "What the h-ll are you doing. You just throw a flag like its nothing at a time like this?  Do you know what's at stake here?  Who am I kidding, of course you don't, you've never played the game".  To which the referee replied "Ma-a-a-a-an...you'd better shut up, boy, and go back to playing."

    After the game Rolle said of the official. "You don't call a grown man with a wife and three kids 'boy.' ... If he put on a helmet, he wouldn't say that to me."

    First, if Rolle isn't whining to the ref then the exchange never takes place.

    Second, he slighted a referee who was an NFL player for 7 years and USFL for 2.

    Third, Phil McKinnely is a fit 6'4" 250 lb black man who played OT & routinely ate people Samari's size for lunch when he played in the league.  Now Samari insults him by insinuating that he doesn't understand what's at stake because he was never good enough to play professionally?  Then this little 6'0" 175 lb man calls him out after the game and says he wouldn't be so mouthy if he had to face him on the field?  Samari, if he put on a helmet today, at 53, I'd bet he would still knock your block off. (When writing this, I can picture a certain lady at my church bobbing her head in agreement saying "Little man - you'd better re-cog-nize!")

    After the horrible calls I have seen this season, I can't believe I find myself defending the officials, but, I think the ref showed great restraint in how he reponded to Rolle.

    Samari Rolle needs to grow up.

    Romo - The "_ _ _ _" (Starts with H and rhymes with Romo) :)

    Sunday, December 9, 2007, 03:20 PM EST [General]

    Here we go again.  Mistakes cause Dallas to almost lose a game and here comes Romo to the rescue to pull a win out of a certain loss.

    Anyone forced to take Latin in High School can tell you that the 4-letter word that "starts with H and rhymes with Romo"  is Latin for "MAN".  Romo proved today that he is most certainly "The Man" in Dallas.

    It seemed certain that Detroit was going to upset Dallas as they were up by 6 points with 7 minutes left to play with Dallas backed up on their own end of the field.  Then Romo led  Dallas downfield for a potential go-ahead score with less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter.  On a play in which Jason Witten almost got into the end zone, he fumbled the ball on the 1/2 yard line and the ball was recovered by Detroit.

    Romo joked on the sidelines with his teammates while Detroit drove the ball back down the field.  Dallas' improved defense seemed to have no answer for the running attack of Detroit.  The Lions were one 3rd down conversion from icing the game when Dallas' defense finally made a big stop.  The ball was punted out of bounds and Dallas had the ball on their own 17 with 2:05 left on the clock, down by six with no timeouts.

    Romo calmly and efficiently led the Cowboys back down the field. In a game where the Lions were determined not to let Terrell Owens beat them, Romo was quick to find the open Witten for a 16-yd touchdown pass with 18 seconds to go.

    Witten set  personal career highs in the game with 143 yards on 15 catches.  Dallas goes to 12-1 and clinches the NFC East with the win. and the newly penned legend of Tony Romo in Dallas continues.

    Romo is truly The "MAN" in Dallas

    Deja Moo: The Feeling You've Heard This Bull Before

    Saturday, December 8, 2007, 03:46 AM EST [NFL]

    Haven't you heard this a thousand times in the last few weeks; "Tony Romo reminds me so much of  Brett Favre, yada, yada, yada?"  Sick of it yet?  Bloggers, sportscasters and some fans have gone as far as crowning Romo the next Ironman of the gridiron and NFL ambassador.   In the words of Lee Corso; "Not so fast, my friend!"

    What happened to the last next Brett Favre?  What was his name...Rex Grossman?  ...J. P. Losman?  ...Jay Cutler?  Actually, Jay has been compared to both Favre and Marino.  What does that make him - the football Messiah with a rocket arm who will never win a ring?  Now I'm getting off point.

    Let me preface this next statement by saying, "I like Tony Romo!"  I am a life-long Dallas Cowboy fan and have cheered and/or revered the players they have put on the field since Roger Staubach (my childhood sports hero) and the "Doomsday Defense" in the early 70's.  I was there to jeer the treatment of Coach Landry by Jerry Jones and also to cheer when his friend Jimmy "Hairdo" Johnson finally molded the triplets into a winning combo.

    However, Tony Romo is no Brett Lorenzo Favre!!!

    ...yet.  I'm not counting out his potential to be as good as Favre. Consider though, the names of the quarterbacks listed above.  They also had to have had a flash of brilliance somewhere along the line to draw those comparisons.  Where are those comparisons now?

    The only things Romo has accomplished is half of one good season which ended in him botching a snap which would have sent Dallas to the playoffs with a game-winning chip-shot field goal, and one above average season which isn't over yet.  So far all he has won is the hearts of Dallas fans with his recent performance, demeanor and smile and dates with Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson.

    I'm yet to see him play through injury time and time again.  I'm yet to see him lead his team to the Super Bowl and then win it in dramatic fashion.  I'm yet to see the Dallas community revere him as they would a founding father.  I'm yet to see him come back as a winner year after year after year.

    He is a talented player that I enjoy watching.  I like the ease that he has in getting along with teammates, like his glib way of dealing with the press and really like that fact that behind him my Cowboys are winning again.  But seriously folks, give it time.

    You see, as is always the case, there are a few  potential next Brett Favre's waiting in the wings.  College players like Matt Grothe from South Florida and LSU's Matt Flynn, Stephen McGee and Aaron Rodgers have also been compared to the great Favre.  What of their prospects if Romo automatically assumes the mantel?

    It isn't just Favre comparison's that irk me.  It's all of them.  Vince Young is supposed to be a more mobile John Elway.  Peyton Manning is supposed to be the next Fran Tarkington.  Philip Rivers is supposed to be the next Dan Marino. Tom Brady is supposed to be the next Joe Montana (that one might stick).  Joe Montana looks more and more like Barry Manilow(sorry about that one...couldn't resist).

    The point is, outside of Manning and Brady; none of these people have proven anything on the field for any longer than a year or maybe two.  The comparisons are made way too early. Fans hear them and want to believe it.  Then undue pressure is then put on young players to play like a HOF quarterback from their rookie year and many of them crack under that pressure.  Had they been allowed to develop, they very well might have become a great player in time.

    So...who's the next  Brett Favre, Gayle Sayers, Deacon Jones, Paul Warfield, Kellen Winslow, Gene Upshaw, Joe Greene, Mike Singletary, Mel Blount or Jan Stenerud (had to put a kicker in there)?  Let's just wait and see shall we.

    You don't wanna wait?  I need to lighten up?

    O.K. then - fire away with the comments.  Who do you think is the next Brett Favre?  ...or Gayle Sayers? ...or Deacon Jones? ... ... ...
