    was today a holiday?

Wednesday, July 12, 2006, 10:46 PM EST [Random Redneck Thoughts]

espn, espn2, FSN-North, tbs....none of them had any sport/game on tonight worth watching.  for a moment, i thought it must be a national holiday.  then i realized it wasnt, because even on holidays we have games to watch.  and, even though it seems like the same matchups every year, games that have meaning, either because of playoff implications, or personal issues, such as the kobe/shaq fiasco we are forced to endure every year from november 15 until new year's day.  yeah, i know the game is actually played on christmas day, but we have to build the drama for 6 weeks, then talk about who played better, and why the one who played worse was off his game.  basically, it's just like the christmas season, where we build ourselves up to think it's going to be great, only to find we didnt get what we wanted, and spend the next week figuring out who we can re-gift which junk to which friend/relative.

tonight, there was a choice between the triple-A all-star game, the wnba all-star game, some boxing junk, and....sex in the city on tbs.  good gravy, i was tempted to dig out my vhs copy of ron dayne running wild in his second rose bowl mvp effort.  unfortunately, i couldnt find it, and ended up watching the hallmark movie instead.  (by the way, is it just me or is jenny garth hotter now than when she was on 90210?).

the absolute worst part about this whole thing is that with it being summer, there was nothing else on worth watching that i hadnt already seen at least twice.  south park was old, i've seen every episode of each law and order franchise, and there's at least 18 networks i refuse to watch, no matter what might be on.  as lousy as summer programming is, and i cant find anyone willing to front the money for my new network.  if the fitness network can turn a profit, then i know mine can, all i need is a chance.

today was the first official day nba teams could sign free agents, and finalize trades that were initiated since the draft.  still, the updates here and anywhere else i get my sports news from were less than spectacular.  some deals werent finalized at all, and the ones that were just didnt create the same response as when first reported.  the moratorium is a waste of 12 good days of fun, and since i havent heard of any signing or trade that fell through, it should be done away with.

i am now going to play the national anthem, so for anyone who is offended by the mention of "God", hit the mute button now.  the only negative about the national anthem is that very few performers can actually sing it well.
