p. j. hill for heisman? not quite, but the kid is impressive. in 7 games, the redshirt freshman has rushed for over 1,000 yards already.
the defense dominated for most of the day. the gophers returned a botched PAT for 2 of their points, and their touchdown came after a 2nd half turnover. the gophers only managed 200 total yards for the game.
if the badgers hope to get to and win a new years day (or later) bowl game, they better improve their special teams play, and focus more on not turning the ball over. with as many balls that hit the ground today, you'd have thought somebody dipped them in butter or something.
so far this season, i think i've seen the punt returner(s) put the ball on the ground more than half a dozen times. against good teams like michigan, it cost them. luckily, they were able to recover them against indiana and minnesota. with penn state, iowa, and a jeckyl-and-hyde illinois left on the schedule, turnovers could be a big factor in the outcome of those games.
college FB observations.
it wasnt a good week for a few ranked teams again, with florida, georgia, iowa, VA-tech, and missouri all losing. USC, michigan and louisville each won by 7 points or less, against lesser opponents.
oklahoma lost their superstar RB adrian peterson for the rest of the regular season (at least) with a broken collarbone. so much for his heisman hopes, and possibly the sooners hopes for a new years day bowl game. peterson landed awkwardly on a long touchdown run, after getting hit just before reaching the goal line, and lunging into the endzone. having seen the replay quite a few times, i'm thinking he was planning a celebratory lunge into the endzone, and coupled with the hit, forced him to land in a bad way.
maybe this will be a lesson to anyone planning to do this in the future....but probably not.
heck, even a minnesota player did that very same celebration after returning a botched PAT attempt 90+ yards....they happened to be down 41-3 at the time. his coach looked unimpressed by the selfish display.
...which leads me to my next point. my dream is that one day, players will stop celebrating silly things such as making a fantastic tackle...8 yards downfield, catching a pass for a 1st down....that you or i could have caught with ease, or scoring a meaningless touchdown when their TEAM is trailing by several scores, in part because that player was inept for most of the game.
it sickens me to see a defensive back get burned play after play, only to make ONE play late in the game, and celebrate like he just shut down the world's best receiver for an entire game.
for the record, i think the university of miami and florida international should both forfeit tonight's game after the pathetic display they put on. players were beating each other with their helmets, and stomping and kicking each other. anyone who blames the coaches of either team need to realize there was very little, if anything, the coaches from either side could have done to prevent this brawl. beyond that, i believe the most violent offenders should have their scholarships taken away, and be kicked off the team permanently.
