imagine this. when the colorado rockies first came into the league, everyone complained about balls flying out at such a rapid pace. this season, runs are way down, and people are complaining about that too. jeff cirillo, milwaukee brewers utility infielder, says that balls used at coors field are water logged, oblong, and heavier than regulation balls.
while he complains, his manager ned yost dismisses the subject. i believe there may be some truth to it, but i think jeff cirillo should be the last guy to complain about not being able to hit the ball over the fence. you see, cirillo played for the rockies for a couple years, and, like everyone else who played their home games in the thin colorado air, tried to become a homerun hitter. it completely killed his ability to hit, and he struggled with the bat for several season before coming back to milwaukee, and finding his swing again.
there are 2 legitimite reasons for the lower run totals at coors field. 1. better pitching, and 2. they dont have vinny castilla, larry walker, dante bichette and andres gallaraga jacking 40 or 50 HR every season.
they do actually have a "humidor" where they store balls at 70 degrees with 50% humidity to offset the extremely dry air outside. the league has given their approval, and it has been in use for about 5 years now. but it does beg the question, why did it take 5 years for runs to go down this far?
there is probably some truth to what cirillo is saying, but i doubt it's as big a deal as he'd like us to believe. one thing to keep in mind: why would the rockies want to make it more difficult for their own players to hit homeruns in their OWN stadium? most likely, because every other team, and possibly their own pitchers, complained about it.
i think there's only 1 solution. demolish every stadium around the country and start over. build a dome stadium everywhere baseball is played, make them all climate controlled, and make sure they all have the same temperaturue, humidity level, and most importantly, MAKE THEM ALL THE SAME SIZE! personally, the real issue should be the gigantic size of the field. to my knowledge, there are no 2 stadiums the same size or shape. nor do they all have the same amount of foul territory, or warning track width. shoot, there's 1 field that has a hill out in center field...what's up with that?
