    Sampdoria 1 Siena 0

Sunday, January 27, 2008, 09:26 PM EST [General]

The Blucerchiati's star man is the difference between the sides in an open and entertaining attack minded game of football.  Cassano hit the bar early on and is instrumental in Mazzarri's steady rebuilding process.

Stadio Luigi Ferraris was well attended and noisy as befits a Sampdoria home game, a crowd once turned off by Mazzarri is warming to the new manager.

Mazzarri fielded a reasonable side, although hardly his strongest.  Castellazzi kept goal behind a back three of Lucchini, Gastaldelio and Accardi.  Francheschini anchored the midfield with Maggio, Palombo, Volpi and Pieri operating in front of him.  Cassano and Bellucci are the attacking pairing.  Pretty much a 3 5 2.

Beretta's team was good and attack minded.  Manninger keeps goal behind a back four of Rossellini, Portanova, Loria and De Ceglie.  Vergassola, Codrea and Gallopa work the midfield with Locatelli sitting behind a front two of Maccarone and Frick.  Just about a 4 3 1 2.

Sampdoria start the brighter of the two sides with Cassano hitting the bar with a screamer early on.  Castellazzi punches clear just above Frick on a Siena cross as the game starts at a bright pace with attacking intent.

Locatelli gets some action as the ball is moving swiftly and purposely from end to end, neither keeper is severely tested and in front of a vocal crowd the tackles are full blooded although not malicious.

Everything Sampdoria is going through Cassano who is getting a good kicking for his talents.  Neither team has a final ball just yet then things take a wrong turn for Siena as Loccatelli goes off injured to be replaced by Forestieri.

Frick forces a stumbling save from Castellazzi from a lovely Maccarone pass.

    Manninger parries well from Bellucci

The game flows from one team to another, the crowd a measure of when Sampdoria are on top.  The home side is finishing strong and the crowd gets behind them.

Just before the break Pieri's belligerence keeps a move alive and the ball is played in from the left, Cassano is the first to move and his marker-baffling turn is surpassed by a sublime curler past the redshirtedandshorted Manninger into the far corner.

The fans go wild and Cassano shows the love he has for Mazzarri.

YMCA! ITS FUN TO SING IT SO YMCA!

Half time sees no changes for either side.

Siena hit the second half with a some fire in their play although when the pressure results in a dangerously placed free kick Galloppa just hoofs it over, zealously over.

Sampdoria funnel their play through Cassano, only Bellucci is coming close to his class and touch but they look more threatening in the final third than Siena.

Rigano is swapped in for Frick to give a bit more bite in the attack and play flows nicely from end to end.  It takes Rigano almost ten minutes before he is able to test Castellazzi.

Sampdoria are defending well and Siena is finding it hard to prise any openings, their quality up front can't slice open the Blucerchiati.

The crowd is solidly behind it's players and Sampdoria gradually assert themselves.

Rigano finds himself free and clear, ten yards out as the ball comes to him from a melee.  His first, second and third touches aren't good, he's closed down and the brilliant opening disappears.

Then Codrea's short manages to test Castellazzi.

Sampdoria get professional in the last twenty, meaty tackles fly and the boys in blue go down real easy, successfully disrupting any rhythm Siena may build.

Delvecchio's introduction with ten to go seals Siena's fate.

The renowned 'hard man' takes the opportunity to kick a few Siena players and tumble to the grass writhing in agony at the merest suggestion of contact.  Professional, sure; sporting, not really.

Mazzarri is making progress, both on the pitch and with the fans.  He has a gem in Cassano although Bellucci has his name high up on the cappocannonieri list.

His side plays a neat brand of football and retains a solid back line.  A UEFA Cup spot is a realistic goal for this season.

Siena is in trouble.  They play well but dropping points when other around them scrape draws is Serie B form.

They played well today bright and attacking and held Sampdoria for long periods in the game.  They don't quite have a Cassano to unlock other teams.  Results against teams in the bottom half of the table will decide their fate.

Referee did well, the game was full blooded and he didn't hand out silly cards.

    ROMA 1 PALERMO 0

Sunday, January 27, 2008, 09:11 PM EST [General]

Roma start at a gallop with some champagne football and resort to more mundane tactics to grind out the win over a game but misfiring Palermo

Saturday in Rome.  A little over forty thousand in the Stadio Olimpico and still it look empty but the Giallorossi Tifosi turned up the volume for their team.

Important game for both teams with Roma keen to keep the pressure on Inter.  Palermo needed the win to restore direction and confidence to their organization.

Spalletti makes changes from the Coppa Italia midweek team.  Doni keeps goal with a back four of Cassetti, Ferrari, Mexes and Tonetto.  Pizzarro, the ebullient Chilean and Brighi sit deep in the middle with Taddei, Perrotta and Mancini sitting further forward.  Totti occupies the lone striker role in a very fluid 4 5 1 formation.

YES! I DO USE THE SAME HAIR STYLIST AS ANDY JOHNSON!

Guidolin is forced into some changes but fields a robust side.  Fontana keeps goal with a back four of Biava, Rinaudo the excellent Barzagli and Zaccardo.  Simplicio retains his place alongside Migliaccio and Guana with Caserta and Miccoli operating as support for Amauri in a defensively minded 4 5 1

The home side starts with precision passing and movement and some stunning touches from the Captain.  Perrotta comes close to opening the scoring with a volley that shaved the upright

Palermo is pegged back but warning bells sound when a Miccoli corner confuses the Roma defence.

Guana and Migliaccio are worked hard with the speed and fluidity of Roma's attack but Palermo hold in there and Miccoli's shot is well crafted but just wide.

Pizzarro shows the bad side of football with a hugely obvious dive in the Palermo penalty area, he gets away without a yellow though.

Roma are flowing beautifully but Totti reputation earns him a fee kick after Migliaccio legally robs him of the ball, moments later Totti gets revenge with an unconcealed hack at the Palermo midfielder's ankles which surprisingly doesn't warrant a card.

Palermo are game but a five man midfield leaves Amauri isolated and the team relatively toothless in attack.  When an opportunity does present itself the Rosaneri are unable to capitalize, Zaccardo escapes the marking of Ferrari at the back post and with the whole goal or Amauri to aim at finds touch.

Roma pressure resumes without quite the bite of the first twenty minutes, Palermo midfielder Caserta skies a half chance.

The game is still tied at the half, this season hasn't seen much champagne from the Giallorossi but more of the grinding and result oriented football.  Palermo seem rooted to the idea of using Amauri on his own up front.

Miccoli gets onto a Migliaccio ball as Palermo come out with some hustle after the break, his turn in the area is neat and his shot is wide.

With help Amauri is more dangerous and it takes a cynical block to stop the Brazilian and Miccoli from creating a great opportunity down the left, the resultant free kick is a complete waste.

Roma have plenty through the midfield but seem to stutter around the edge of the Palermo area and when they breach the visitors defence they don't finish well, Perrotta hacks at a half chance in the area and the ball doesn't trouble Fontana.

Tough tackling and a solid defensive shape keep Palermo into the game until the referee steps in and give Rinaudo and straight red for a studs up challenge.  In a game devoid of malice a yellow and a stern warning should suffice.

Less than two minutes later with Guana dropping into the defence a quickly taken Roma corner sees Mancini rise above his confused markers and reach the ball in front of the flailing Fontana to head home the opener.

The game is effectively over, a slew of substitutions can't help ten man Palermo and Roma defend and keeps possession well, mostly holding Palermo at arms length.

The incidents in the remainder of the game are Mexes heading onto the post from a corner with Fontana well beaten, Cavani skying one from eight yards out and Fontana saving well from an incorrectly flagged offside Aquilani.

With results like today's Guidolin must realize he has the remainder of the season before he gets the sack.  Palermo was tough to break down and obdurate but lacked any real threat going forward with Amauri isolated.

They have talent and some good players but if they fail to get a European spot by season's end they will be picked over by the bigger Italian clubs.  Every game when they push a man up to help Amauri they've looked more dangerous.  Coming to defend just isn't working for the Rosanero.  A bright spot was the form of youngster Jankovic.

Roma lacked a cutting edge against Palermo but had enough guile and quality to eke out a win.  A good home three, especially with Inter drawing keeps faint Scudetto hopes alive.  The return of Aquilani will be refreshing for Spalletti as will the fight for places when the squad is at full strength.

Brighi was harsh in the sending off and lenient when Cassetti didn't get booked for a second body check.

    SERIE A WEEK 20 PREVIEW

Friday, January 25, 2008, 10:23 PM EST [General]

    Serie A week 20 preview.

Internaz ionale are still in top spot.  Milan won and lost.  Fiorentina and Roma kept up with the leaders and Juventus slipped up.  Siena climbed out of trouble whilst Palermo stuttered (again).  Lazio may have kick started their season whereas Napoli dropped points on the leaders.  Reggina did their relegation dogfight chances no harm whereas Cagliari is looking at Serie B.  Atalanta won and lost.  Genoa climbed whilst Empoli lost ground.  Parma slipped up as did Udinese.  Livorno climbed whilst Empoli fell.

    FIXTURES

    Livorno V Juventus

A home draw in Turin meant an end to the Bianconeri Scuddetto hopes.  Whilst a win for Livorno took them out of the relegation dogfight a tad.  Juventus aren't as good on the road as they are in Turin but should have enough to beat a midtable Livorno.

Both sides will be at less than full strength but look out for Trezeguet, Iaqunita or Tavano to score.  Much will depend on who scores first.

    Draw.

    Roma V Palermo

Roma continue to look good for second place with another win whilst Palermo dropped points at Siena.  Winless in three the Rosaneri are stumbling and will need to be at their best to beat Roma in Rome.

Look to see who copes best between the sticks with both Doni and Fontana equally capable of stunning saves or comedy errors.  Roma are almost at full strength whilst Palermo will tweak things a little to try to turn things around.

    Home Win.

    Sampdoria V Siena

A good draw for the Blucherati and a good win for the Robur.  A good middle of the table clash with both clubs looking at the teams around them.  The home game will benefit Sampdoria more as their form in Tuscany is good, Siena don't travel as well but will be buoyed by last weeks away win.

Both sides miss key players but have ample threat up front, Forestieri for the visitors and Bellucci for Sampdoria.

    Draw.

    Atalanta V Reggina

Both teams coming off wins will be looking to consolidate with another three points.  Atalanta are handy at home whilst Reggina remain winless on the road.

Both sides will be full of confidence but the quick succession of games could hinder the home side with the Calabrian side fresher.

Brienza; Reggina's new additions scored on his debut and Doni back and playing well for the home side.

    Home Win.

    Cagliari V Napoli

Neither side got a helpful result last week and a turnaround will be expected from the fans.  The Azzurri started brightly but have tailed off as the season wears on, the Rossoblu are just bad this season, Serie B looms large.

Manager and one very naughty player are suspended for the trip to the Stadio Sant'Elia, the Rossoblu are awash with injury problems.

Jeda and Matri must find the net for Cagliari and expect some South American inspired flair in front of goal from the Azzurri.

    Away Win

    Empoli V Fiorentina

Empoli are embroiled in the relegation battle already and a win is needed with the struggling Lazio in their sights.  Fiorentina could match Juventus for points with a win.  One corner of Tuscany haven't won in four although are unbeaten at home in five, another corner is on a run of three wins.

The Gigliati are at full strength, whilst the home side may struggle to field a full set of strikers.  Mutu is in fine form and Vieri is weighing in with his share.  It'll be a tough afternoon for Balli.

    Away win.

    Milan V Genoa

Milan come off a tough win and a tough defeat whilst Genoa are climbing the table with two consecutive Serie A wins.  Genoa have trouble scoring away from home whilst Milan are terrible at the San Siro this season.  Milan will be looking for the same UEFA Cup spot that Genoa is after.

SuperPippo is the only injury for the Rossoneri so selection will be key for Ancellotti.  Injury, suspensions and unfit players hamper the Rossoblu who are still confident.

Which of the Brazilians will partner Kaka and will Seedorf play further forward?  Can Milan owned Borriello score against his owners?

    Draw.

    Torino V Lazio

Both sides hover just above the relegation zone in a precarious manner; two grand old clubs in trouble.  Torino's recent form is worse than Lazio's, although only just.  Rolando Bianchi has just moved to Rome from Manchester, although a move to Turin was thought more likely.  This will add spice if the Italian U21 hitman gets a start or is on the bench for the Biancocelesti.

Neither side is at full strength whilst not being as depleted as some teams.

Goals are the problems so no matter whom starts expect the experience of record breaking Ballotta and Sereni to be vital to the outcome.

Last season Lazio mounted a 4-0 smash and grab in Turin.

    Draw.

    Udinese V Inter

Internaz ionale should be reeling with some dubious performances in 2008, they are still unbeaten though.  Susceptible but resilient; in no small part thanks to the goals of Ibrahimovic and Cruz the Nerazzurri still top Serie A.  Last week saw Udinese lose late on to Milan and drop a place behind Fiorentina and back into the UEFA Cup places.

Udine is a tough place to visit with only two losses this season.  Inter are escapologists supreme; particularly after the last two weeks.

Neither side is at full strength; Mancini has more problems than Marino but does have some stars returning.

This game will be all about goals and in Cruz, Ibrahimovic and Quagliarella; one of the better Italian marksmen from open play; will all want to get some action.

Inter's amazing streak of not losing will be severely tested by the Zebretta and to be lucky four times on the bounce would be unfeasibly spawny.

    Away win.

    My Game of the Week.

    Udinese V Internaz ionale

WIGAN 1 EVERTON 2 : LATICS PLAY WELL, EVERTON FINISH BETTER.

Monday, January 21, 2008, 07:20 AM EST [USA]

JJB Stadium; a football game in a rugby town, a football game on a rugby pitch.  Perhaps that's why the stadium is rarely filled for football?

Both Moyes and Bruce keep improving their sides.  Today though Everton were an example of a team not playing particularly well but taking all three points.  Wigan had more ball but couldn't really use it, Bramble has his usual howler and the pitch more than played a part in an away win.

...and it was only after I'd finished burying him that I realized his coffin was upside down..!

Almost a local derby; but not quite; plenty of fans made the trip to the JJB Stadium from the City Of Culture.  Expectations were high from both sides.  Moyes' side continues to do well in the Premier League and Bruce's squad seem too good to go down.  The pitch was heavy and was cutting up during pre match practice.  Kept on the heavy side for the rugby games; it's not a great surface to play on, for either side.

Bruce selected a bit of pace and guile wide but more grit and grind in the middle, height and crosses looked to be the order of the day.  Pretty orthodox 4 4 2 for the ex United defender, Kirkland keeps goal behind a back line of Melchiot, Scharner, Bramble and Kilbane (himself an ex Blue).  The middle had new signing Palacios on the right with Brown and Landzaat inside him and Valencia on the left.  Bent and Heskey provide brawn up front.

Moyes goes with his familiar 4 4 1 1.  Howard keeps goal, Hibbert, Lescott, Jagielka and Valente provide the defence.  Carsley sits in front of the back four alongside Neville, Osman; returning after injury and Arteta.  Cahill operates behind Johnson in attack.  Johnson and Osman returning to fitness is a boost as is the form of Jagielka.  This team provides a limited type of attack but plenty of options from midfield.

Palacios looks bright and show some strength on the ball but poor finishing in the early going and for the visitors Arteta shows a good first touch and a heavy second in the Wigan area.

The opening play is patchy; neither team is helped by the heavy pitch which makes passes harder to pick out and saps the strength of the runners.

Wigan is playing some neat football on the left with Palacios showing well and in the middle they are overpowering the visitors.  Their second half chance comes on the left with Valencia cutting inside and laying the ball into Melchiot, the ex-Chelsea player misreads the ball and Everton clear.

Arteta picks up a stupid yellow card, he gets a second chance to deliver a better ball in from another free kick in a similar position and Bramble does well to hurry Carsley whose volley sails over the bar.

It takes Everton a little over fifteen minutes to create their first good passing move, Johnson win the ball in the middle and plays it to Neville, the return ball finds Johnson in space and he is able to cross under pressure from Melchiot, Arteta has time to pick his spot but only fires straight at Kirkland who is agile enough to parry the ball away.

Wigan get their first corner kick a little after twenty minutes, poor Everton marking by Neville allows Bent a free header, Howard is alert enough to palm the ball onto the bar before it is cleared.

Everton are disjointed and struggling, which is as much down to Wigan's harrying physical play than as Everton's incohesiveness and the heavy pitch.

Wigan is having plenty of the ball, their approach work is good but the final ball in or the finishing touch isn't good enough.  Everton are sitting and defending and Heskey is losing the physical battle with Lescott.

On thirty eight minutes Wigan come undone, Everton continue with their dogged defending and Arteta plays a speculative ball up the right flank, Johnson chases; as he has all game; Bramble is perfectly positioned to cut across Johnson and play the ball back to his keeper, the defender's touch is terrible and Johnson nips in front to pick up the soft back pass.  one-on-one with Kirkland the striker calmly slots the ball between the keeper's legs for the opener.

Try not to do it against Chelsea!

Wigan's mistake prone defender shows some mettle with a few good challenges and clearances in the moments after the goal.

Everton; rejuvenated by the goal; come at Wigan and force a corner, Bent's aerial prowess clears the first ball behind but the second corner is horribly defended, a momentary lapse of defensive skills for Wigan as the ball bounces around in the six yard box before Osman hooks it to the back post, Lescott scores with a smash of a volley to net his seventh of the season.

Melchiot and Valencia combine on the right to put in a good cross but no Wigan player is alive to the delivery.

Neither manager makes half time changes.

Wigan start the second half in second gear as Everton look for a third, the home side has to be alert to clear a well delivered Arteta free kick.

Two substitutions change the complexion of the game.  Bruce brings off Heskey and Landzaat and brings on Sibierski and Koumas.  The midfielder's first touch is priceless, a sweetly delivered ball to the back post which Howard comes for but doesn't reach, an unfortunate Jagielka is unable to move aside as the ball hits him and caroms into the net.  Really poor goalkeeping.

The goal invigorates Wigan but their best moments all come from Koumas free kicks which Everton aren't inclined to be generous with.

Plenty of Wigan play in front of the visitors but a lack of a good final ball or a final ball which isn't picked up is a feature of Wigan's play.

Vaughn's introduction for Neville gives Wigan some defensive problems and the game opens up a touch, but poor passing deprives Wigan of their one sniff off goal as they break quickly and leave Everton vulnerable.

The home side keeps plugging away but can't prise open he obdurate Everton defence.

Everton didn't play well today, Wigan we're able to frustrate them for most of the game, defensively though the visitors looked calm and collected.  What surprised me most were the substitutions.  The heavy pitch will have taken its toll and Wigan weren't exactly peppering Howard's goal so earlier and more substitutions would have made sense.  Let Anichebe, Vaughn and Fernandes come on and give, Johnson, Cahill and Osman a rest.  A good away win though when not at our best.  Osman's form was bright, with some good passing, tackling and he almost bagged a sweet goal.

    ..Andy, it feels so smooth!

Bruce shows what he can do without a huge investment in the team.  Wigan played well for long stretches of the game with Palacios bright throughout.  They might feel they deserved something from the game for their efforts but the contest is about goals and they rarely tested Howard and rarely found balls to test the Everton defence.  The substitution's had an immediate impact and Koumas' free kicks were Wigan's main threat.

Another game where they played well but didn't win.  That form should stand them in good stead when playing the sides further down the table.

Probert wasn't very good.  Inconsistent.  Lenient.  Authoritarian.  He didn't get anything major wrong but got a lot of the basics wrong.  I'd love to get a read of his match report to see why he booked Arteta.  I don't think I've ever seen a yellow card given in that situation before.  Cahill should have got a yellow.
