SUPERLIGA FINAL; A MISSED OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MLS

Tuesday, August 28, 2007, 05:40 PM EST [Superliga]

SUPERLIGA Final - is MLS making a mess of this event?

I managed to watch a few of the SUPERLIGA games this season, LA beating United was one I particularly remember, plenty of good football and the excitement of a Cup Competition, OK so no European qualification but a cool million makes things worth playing well for.

The other SUPERLIGA games are the problem; most; if not all; are on the MLS liveTV channel, it's PPV; the MLS wants this competition to be a success and that should surely mean ratings.  I don't understand why the Spanish language channel is the only cable channel broadcasting the final, what about FSC, ESPN, GolTV or COMCAST; could not a deal have been worked out for the final.  Surely denying the spectacle of a new competition to all but the subscribers and Spanish speakers is a bit daft.

The FA Cup is easily available to non-subscription viewers in England, it gets high ratings; particularly the final.  The SUPERLIGA ratings can't be expected to be very good with limited access to the game.

If this were an old and well established competition, such as the Copa Libertadores then I could understand that you pay for the privilege of viewing.  How can you grow a competition; and a with it league; with restrictive practices like this one.

Maybe next year I'll get the MLSliveTV package so I can select my games.  This year I don't think I'll stay up till 11pm (EST) to watch a game with a Spanish telecast.  I'd really like to but it's not going to happen.

Maybe I could find an internet radio broadcast and synchronize the two but that's a bit too much faffing around.

I know that some Spanish language channels offer sporting events in multiple languages, this one (FTRAE) doesn't.

The opportunity was there to popularize a new MLS product; seems like Garber and co have fluffed this one.

The MLS kind of fluffed Beckham's full debut, ESPN, FSC, COMCAST and GOLtv only had highlights, the Spanish Language channel had his scorcher of a free kick and a beautiful through ball for Donovan.  Although the way ESPN mouthed off about it you'd have thought they had the game.

Of course I'd love to hear what you think!
