Testy final eventually comes to life; Argentina edges a close one.
The final of the U20 World Cup played at the Nation Soccer Stadium in Toronto wasn't the prettiest match but plenty of fans; from all the competing nations; witnessed the game and enjoyed the atmosphere and ceremony.
The Czech Republic would be missing Janda through suspension, Mares came in as his backup and Fenin and Kalouda would be the main strike threats. The Czechs had the height advantage over the Argentines.
Argentina; conceding just one goal so far; would have to make three changes; Yacob and Cahais suspended and Di Maria Injured allowed room in the starting line up for Sanchez, Zarate and a tournament debut for Sigale.
A testy, tetchy half full of fouls, dives, the referee's whistle and not much in the way of play. Stamping his authority on the game early the Spaniard was forced to show yellow way too much. Any flow the game night have had was stopped; 28 fouls in the first half; more for the Czechs; had the crowd booing; particularly when an Argentine dived.
What play there was consisted of the Czech defending compactly and well against Argentina, whose passing and probing couldn't find many openings.
The free kicks from the Czechs didn't take advantage of their height advantage; Argentinean free kicks never had any venom.
Mercado was lucky to stay on the pitch; a shove on Fenin wasn't carded and the two players shard handbags later on in the half.
The Czechs saw more of the ball in the latter stages of the half but Argentina finished the stronger team.
The second half promised more of the dross of the first and for the first fifteen minutes didn't disappoint.
The Czechs landed the first real blow. Attacking down the right flank the ball fell to Kalouda, he dribbled on the edge of the area and after cutting back he whipped in a ball towards Fenin, the Czech striker took the pace off the ball with his first touch and spun and hammered the ball home with his second, Romero was beaten and the game had just come alive.
Feeling too confident the Czechs abandoned their solid defending and got punished with a quick equalizer. Banega; always tenacious in the tackle and good with the ball; fired a pass which cut through the entire Czech defence, free with space and time Aguero needed just the one touch to stroke the ball past Petr; his sixth goal of the tournament.
Both 'keepers had good saves in this half; Romero in particular pulled one out of the top drawer.
Argentina started looking for the winner, the Czechs created their own opportunities with quick breaks and for a while the match was end to end football.
A late corner kick for Argentina was taken short and Zarate; turned his marker; fired a shot from distance which beat Petr at his near post.
Tocalli will be happy to get the victory; another in a long line of Argentina U20 World Cups.
Soukup will be happy to have reached the final but disappointed that the first half was so terrible.
Mallenco was the worst man on the pitch. He showed yellow early and imposed order on the game with over the top officiating and way too many yellows; he also can't spot an Argentinean dive and didn't send off Mercado. Poor refereeing; especially in a final; especially from a Spaniard.
