Forte - Does Colin Think It Means Vajajay?

Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 03:24 PM EST [NCAA FB]

It is said that college football is Colin Cowherd's forte. ESPN seems to think so, since they stuck him in the booth for Friday's Syracuse/U-Dub game. Well, it goes without saying that Meeeeshigan and Appalachian State was a hot topic on Colin's radio show.  Granted, Colin was trying to point out that other top teams were able to handle lesser competition, but he made a glaring error that one should not make when speaking of their forte.  He referred to Idaho as a 1-AA program.

    Ummmmm

Idaho is in the WAC.  You may remember the WAC.  Their champion won the Fiesta Bowl.  This highlights my problem with major college football.  I look to the right of the screen where I update my overrated/underrated lists.  Heading into the season, I decided to include "legacy college programs."  I did this because too many teams have good years, but can't crack the major bowls, since the major players have those spots (save for ND's impending 4-8 season).  Teams from the WAC, CUSA, and Mountain West (at least the top teams) can compete at the national level.  Non BCS schools are 2-0 in BCS bowl games.

Now you may say, "Hey btroup1, you lambast small sample sizes." Aha!  Thanks for makiing my point.  How do you know that Penn State is markedly better than Hawaii?  How do you know that Oregon is markedly better than Fresno State?  You really don't, unless they play.  A team that goes 12-0 deserves a chance to play top level competetion.  Then we all can see who's right.

Now you may say, "Hey btroup1, you can't equate wins over Wisconsin and Iowa to wins over Idaho and Nevada."  This is the part that really sticks in my crawl, and it gets back to the point I was making about Colin Cowherd's gaffe.  These non-BCS schools are looked upon as something that isn't quite 1A football.  That's bogus.  It's not like teams just decide one day to become 1A.  There are stadium requirements, scholarship requirements, and scheduling requirements.  So long as schools make that investment, they should have just as much right to play in, and reap the rewards of major college football, as the legacy schools have.

Edit: I don't know the meaning of the title.  I just felt now was as good a time as any to use the term vajajay.
