Even After Beating the Rams, the Talk Shows Still Want BMore to BE the Rams

    Monday, October 15, 2007, 09:56 AM EST [ESPN 1300]

I really wanted the Ravens to win this game as much as I want them to beat the Bengals and the Steelers.  The Ravens weren't just up against the Rams on Sunday.  They were up against a philosophy.  So much is said of the Ravens inadequacies on offense.  In terms of TOP and first downs, the Ravens move the ball well and get enough points to let their defense loose.  Understood that the red zone offense leaves a lot to be desired, but the team is probably where it should be at 4-2.  But this isn't good enough because the Ravens don't win their games "like the Rams" or like the Colts.  Those teams are a combined 5-6.  That style of play is hit or miss.  You can bury an opponent, or you can get buried in your avalanche.  The Ravens execute a game plan for each opponent.  Why is this an issue?

That diatribe brings me to today's egregious sports talk error.  Tom Davis, a Baltimore broadcasting institution (such as they may be), declared that Steve McNair can no longer throw the ball 20 yards.  I'm not talking accuracy here.  He said that Steve McNair CAN'T throw the ball more than 20 yards.  If Steve McNair throws the ball up and serves it like a volleyball, it will go 20 yards.

While it was Kyle Boller who started yesterday's game, all the talk was about whether McNair could still captain this offense.  Let me say this, Kyle Boller is better than people say.  He has a winning record as a starter in this league.  True, that when he plays, the ball seems to go downfield a little more than with McNair.  What Steve does bring to the table, is a high completion percentage and an ability to execute the game plan.  Will this two headed monster work?  It could, but all these calls to turn into the Rams are idioitic.  How did being the Rams help the Rams yesterday?
