Anyone who reads this blog knows the likely genesis of this post. Again, Colin Cowherd is a successful commentator with an entertaining show. It's why I keep coming back. Well, that, and I get blog material. Today's nitpick has to do with the potential of a Ohio State vs. Boston College championship game. Colin is up in arms that this may be the match-up. He wants to see Oregon and LSU. Great. They can play in the Fiesta Bowl. But, of course, he wants this to be the big game.
This is my problem with college football - probably moreso than Colin Cowherd trying to pass of his dream match-up as gospel. People are way to engrossed in the beauty contest aspect of this sport. It's the same problem I have with boxing, gymnastics, and ice skating. People look at the names, and are quick to dole out the highest accolades available. Would we have a problem with numbers 1 and 2 if Boston College were replaced with LSU or Oklahoma? Why is Evander Holyfield still fighting for the World title - uggggh?
People like Herbie, Cowherd, and Corso criticize the fact that computers get involved in ranking teams, thus we get Ohio State and BC. Look everyone, want to see LSU, Oregon, or Oklahoma? Tell them to go on that 53x100 yard space and win more than the other teams. The computers are the unbiased portion of the formula. People want to talk about schedules. The computers have a schedule component. Can a writer or SID really quantify the difference between playing Vanderbilt and Army? No, they just qualify it by looking at the conferences. The computers use the criteria the pundits want, and the teams that shook out from that are Ohio State and BC. Deal.
Just because something doesn't conform to your opinion, doesn't make it the wrong thing. The natural course of action is to discuss the merits of a playoff. I'm all for it, but it's a topic that has been addressed here many times before. The BCS is the system of our times. It was signed off on by the college presidents. You're entitled to the opinion, but don't ever say that "they got it wrong." It's what we have apparently agreed to, and we are obliged to accept the outcome.
If you want to vote for champions, understand that others have the same right. Do you think that people from varying areas and backgrounds will actually come to a consensus? Of course not. So stop telling me what's best for me. Let the chips fall. The BCS is a good step in that direction. If BC and OSU meet for the title, good for them. Now the next step, make the system more inclusive.

This guy, among others, thinks he knows more than an unbiased computer program.
