Welcome Back Dan Patrick - Now Understand That There is B-ball Played Outside of Storrs

Wednesday, October 24, 2007, 11:14 AM EST [College Basketball]

Dan Patrick is back on the radio.  He has gone indie on us.  This incarnation isn't as ESPNized as the old show, but you still know where the man is coming from on an issue.  As a self proclaimed consumer of sports talk radio (if for no other reason than blog fodder), I listen to a variety of shows at work.  I listen to the local shows (usually after wins), or I stream a show from a market with a big story.  If it's ho-hum, I use ESPN radio as my default.

One thing I disliked about Dan's show on ESPN was the assumption that we couldn't remember something he said twenty minutes ago.  Colin Cowherd gave us listeners some insight into this philosophy.  He said that ESPN likes to cram market data down the talent's throats.  The average listener apparently listens for 45 minutes.  In a three hour show, you would have to mention something 4 times for the entire audirence to hear it.  But the callers and e-mailers, the ones driving the product, are listening in its entirety.  Give these folks some credit.  Anyhow, old habits die hard for Dan, but it's not as bad as when he was with ESPN

    .....

I wanted to take a moment to address a topic I heard on Dan's show.  He was talking about the NCAA's sportsmanship rules, and technical fouls being assessed for cursing, no questions asked.  The two coaches he pointed out were Bob Knight and Jim Calhoun.  How about Gary Williams?  The coach who is known for calling timeouts to sit players down, only to say "you suck, you suck, you suck, you suck, you suck, now get back out there an play."  So that choice hits home, but what about the man who curses like a sailor?  The man who conjures clusters of cusses for conference clashes.  The man who has created a nice guy/Mr holsum niche for himself.  I'm speaking, of course, about this man:

This man will determine if this new rule has any teeth, or if it will just go after the perceived "bad sports."
