Chris Mortensen + Flight Delayed = First Entry in A Long Time

Wednesday, September 19, 2007, 08:43 AM EST [Chris Mortensesn]

I have been in and out of town the last week and a half, and I fear that Colin Cowherd probably said the stupidest thing in the history of the world without my sonar being in the on position.  Right now, he is going off on Isiah Thomas and making sense.  Maybe through osmosis, IJWMFTT has sent the phone line ahead that there's peace in the valley, and it was all in fear for their lives with these blogs and radio shows.

Last week, as I sat on my Airtran flight from Charlotte to Baltimore, I had the pleasure of listening to Chris Mortensen on XM radio.  Perhaps it was when I was contemplating the fact that sports radio had become intelligent that Airtran delayed my flight so that I could hear some Mortimer nonsense.  Chris Mortensen said, in the context of speaking about injuries, that we can't complain about how much money these players make.

I can't?  Why not?  It's a free market, and these players found the right industry.  Bully for them.  I begrudge them nothing.  But let's understand something - we don't exist to please them.  If a player does not perform to the degree that they should, then people should eb allowed to express some discord.  People should earn their money, regardless.  Plenty of people have earned their money, and been downsized.  It's perfectly natural to see someone paid more to underperform whilst maintaining their position.  This isn't to say that I or another fan would fill in aptly if a team did cut a player.  It's a GP thing, and it's the implied contract between the fans and the team.

But what about injuries?  There are plenty of jobs with occupational hazards.  And yes, you can complain about the money they make.  How was the financial well being of a miner who was active prior to the creation of black lung benefits?  How about those oil rig workers?  How about truck drivers?  We should complain about those salaries because the pay is not always commiserate to the risk.  Those risks are just the same, if not greater than an NFL player, but the pay supports the hazard.  So Mort, just because players get hurt, don't take that as license to tell me how to be a sports fan.  Unless, of course, you don't mean it and your pining for the players to get your next scoop.
