A positive from the world of sports talk radio: June Jones, head coach at Hawai'i, has been banging the Colt Brennan drum all year long. Currently, he is on Mike Tirico's show, steadfast in his belief that Colt Brennan is the best player in college football. Who wouldn't want to play for this guy?
*I have said for years that the NFL has too many rules that put judgement calls in the hands of officials. It's time for the NFL to adopt the college reception rule. Either you get the foot in, or you don't. Scoring actually won't be affected too much, because force outs would be a thing of the past and interceptions would be enforced just the same.
*Add pass interference to that list. There's no guarantee that the ball will be caught.
*Conversely, college football should just go with a 35 or 40 second clock to rid us of chain gangs with incosistent foot speed, or officials with varying ball spotting techniques. Sometimes the 25 second clock is actually 25 seconds, other times it's 45 seconds.
*Why should teams recording a safety get points and the ball? I think an interesting strategic element would be added by teams taking safeties to cede 2 points and get the ball on the 20.
*I'd like to see the NFL adopt the CFL rouge rule. Whilst you'd get a point for recording a rouge, touchbacks would be bumped up to the 25 or 30. We may see more attempts at coffin corner kicks.
*A blocked extra point should only be run back for one point. The point after a touchdown should not be worth one to the offense and two to the defense. On two point conversions, a runback would be worth two.
*Games are 60 minutes. Minute one and minute sixty are all important. So long as a team has a timeout, they should be allowed to challenge. If not, just get rid of it altogether.
*I saw a "vintage" game on the NHL network. It was from 1980. Whatever they doing then, do it now. I found it more compelling than the current product. I think this all started with the FOX glowing puck, nad went down from there.
*Give the ACC more NCAA bids than the Big 10, or stop playing that ridiculous ACC/Big 10 challenge. The ACC is 9 out of nine, and doesn't always get more bids.
*Perhaps MLB should create a third major league. Too many teams can't compete in this two league system with the current number of playoff teams, and the economic structure the way it is. This smacks of European soccer, but hey, might as well throw it out there while I'm selling crazy...
*If commentators continue to say "a playoff will never happen," then I guess they're right.
*Tell the Big 10 to add Notre Dame, poach Pitt, or simply petition the NCAA to allow a title game with only 11 members. These out of balance schedules, and teams backing in to the big game are unfair to the other conferences.
*While you're at it, tell the Pac 10 to do the same with Hawaii and Fresno. Lest ye forget, the Arizonas were once pasrt of the WAC. It can be done.
*While you're at that, get the MWC and WAC to get Boise, Utah, BYU, and Air Force in one conference. Then trim the fat like San Jose State and Idaho.
