Colin Cowherd teased a segment about today's one game playoff between the Rockies and the Padres by declaring that the winner will wind up with a disadvantage. Truth be told, I think the loser of this playoff will have an upward hill to climb if it wants to win the World Series. But that's just me...
Okay okay, I'll be fair. In the segment itself, he was arguing against the concept of a one game playoff, in favor of any other method to break ties. The thing is this, you have an unbalanced schedule, thus MLB treats games as independent events. From MLB's standpoint, the Padres could play the Rockies on September 10 and the Brewers on May 10, and both would be of equal importance. So through 162 games, these two teams were the same. A playoff is needed to see who advances. Now, a good argument would be this: the loser of this game should still get to lay claim to being a playoff team. The league schedule is 162 games. Through those games, the loser of today's game was nonetheless qualified to keep playing for a chance to win the title.
