I just don't get it anymore. The college football bowl season just doesn't mean the same as it used to. I have been watching the National Championship Game tonight with almost no emotion and yet I found it to be an entertaining game. In fact the game is still on while I am sitting here banging on this keyboard. LSU seems to have the game in hand and I am happy about that, but if it were the other way around, it really wouldn't matter to me.
In days gone by it was relatively easy to stay interested because all the important games were going to happen on January 1st. You could take a month off and refocus yourself for one day. New Years day was planned. Early brunch took place with the Rose Parade on in the background to entertain the ladies. A bunch of somewhat hung over guys argued about which of the games was going to be the best. As I recall, it all started with the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl with the Rose Bowl beginning in late afternoon. The Cotton Bowl was the night game and when the whistle at the end of that game signaled, it also signaled the end of the college football season. (I may have the order screwed up a little, but I'm too lazy to bother checking out exactly when the games were played).
We would then spend the next few months discussing how the polls screwed up in choosing the National Champion. The way it is now, we don't even get to argue that. The BCS has told us a month prior to New Years Day that one of two teams was going to be the Champion. That's the way it is. Forget about 3, 4 or 5. Number one and number two could play to a two to nothing overtime result in perfect football weather, and the team lucky enough to get a safety in overtime would be the National Champion regardless of how 3, 4 or 5 looked during their games. There is something wrong with this. There is also something wrong with "also-rans" playing in the Rose Bowl.
I also find it discouraging how diluted the whole bowl series has become. First, there are too many games and second, there is no identification for any of these games anymore. What ever happened to the Citrus Bowl, or the Peach Bowl, or the Holiday Bowl? I just can't get excited about the Meineke Car Care Bowl, or the Chick-Filet Bowl, or the Tostitos Bowl or the Champs Sports Bowl. I hate it when AT&T, Allstate, Citicorp, Auto Zone, Petro Sun, Bell Helicopter and FedEx have their names in front of the classic bold names. I understand the need for it, but I hate it.
Now there is never going to be a playoff system in college football. Let me say that one more time for all you disbelievers. There is never going to be a playoff system in college football! Understanding that, I have determined that it was better the way it used to be before all these corporate sponsors got involved and before the BCS so miserably tried to fix something that wasn't all that bad.
