Serie A has two excellent matches scheduled for Saturday.

Juventus v Fiorentina

These two sides have almost identical records with goal difference all that separates them – Juventus has a + 5 to Fiorentina’s +3.  However, Juventus and Fiorentina approach this game from very different directions.

Ciro Ferrara is facing his first mini-crisis since taking over from Claudio Ranieri at the tail end of last season. Two draws and a loss in the league combined with two draws in Champions League have tarnished a start that had brought four fairly convincing wins while conceding only one goal.

Conversely, Fiorentina have picked up momentum since losing away to Lyon in the Champions League and being badly beaten 3-1 by Roma a month ago. Within ten days of the second loss Fiorentina

The Best…..

Arjen Robben repaid some of that large transfer fee with a two goal debut for Bayern Munich against last season’s Champions Wolfsburg. That should take a little pressure off manager Louis van Gaal if only for a short time.

There has never been a question about Robben’s ability but there have been justifiable concerns about his capacity to stay fit or to play when not exactly 100%.

After an impressive opening day showing against Siena Milan were destroyed on Saturday by a rampant Inter side. Inter tore into their city rivals and had too much power, strength, movement and pace – Milan could not live with Inter.

Serie A
The last few seasons have not gone kindly for Serie A. In 2003 we had two Italian teams (Milan and Juventus) contest the Champions League final and although Milan won the trophy in 2007 the reality is that the league has taken a real kicking on and off the field.

A revival in fortune seems to be some years off especially after a summer in which the league’s two greatest stars Kaka and Ibrahimovic have moved to take up residence in Madrid and Barcelona.

Nonetheless, there have been some very interesting and exciting signings during the last six weeks and here is a rundown of some of them.

Transfer Dealings
Real Madrid shocked almost everyone with how quickly they moved to sign Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema after the transfer window opened. But the most intriguing transfer so far has to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona from Inter with Samuel Eto’o going in the opposite direction along with a loan + option deal for Alexander Hleb.

From a Barcelona perspective they are losing a player in Eto’o who they were willing to let go only twelve months ago but who scored a barrel-load of goals for them last season and who was an important part of the treble winning team. Hleb was signed from Arsenal last year mostly to provide back-up (primarily to Lionel Messi) and saw relatively little action.
