I notice that the picture in the comments has my mouth cut off - perhaps not a bad thing.

LH-JS & gus-keri: First, even talking about the GC in the same sentence with the Euro is generous to say the least -- CONCACAF’s 40 members don’t exactly match up too well with UEFA's 53 members, as a several aren’t even proper countries, and too many others I would tend to equate with Liechtenstein or Andorra. No, an equivalent competition in this part of the world would have to include CONMEBOL.
mseboldThat said, I don’t at all think that Canada should approach the GC as a U23 event, but the average age of our starting ten outfielders against Jamaica was about 27, and only three of them were significantly under 27. Now, I certainly don’t mean to suggest that we exclude all of our veterans, as the young’uns will need guidance on the pitch, but by 2014 the average age of our lineup from the Jamaica game will be 32 -- not good. By contrast, even for the 2006 WC, the DFB recognized that they were in somewhat of a rebuilding phase: Germany’s ten regular starters had an average age of about 25, and half were under that age. This groundwork paid some good dividends in 2008, and looks likely to do so again in 2010.
And even for the GC, I would put the emphasis on 2011, because, as Bobby said, it’s kind of hard to get knocked out at the group stage, as eight of the twelve teams move on. I say use this year to build experience with our younger players, and then go for the win in 2011, as we build towards 2014. Besides, I think there’s a good chance we would do better this year by starting the likes Jackson (who brought some excitement to the Jamaica game) and Attakora (who isn’t even on the roster).
