3-0 0.49 ERA
Friday Mike Maroth did what he has done all season, he won. Maroth improved to 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA. He keeps making strides that he has needed to keep improving. Maroth has tossed 17 1/3 scoreless innings since giving up a home run in his first inning of the season April 8. He has been very steady and has made all the right pitches when he has had to. He has pitched out of several jams early on this year. He has had good stuff all along. He is just putting it in the right order more often now.
After Maroth left the game on Friday, the Tigers used Joel Zumaya, who pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The Tigers also activated closer Todd Jones who came in and got the save on Friday night as well. "They ended the game with two closers there," Sexson said of Zumaya and Jones. "That guy (Zumaya) could easily be a closer on any other team."
Saturday Nate Robertson (2-2) allowed two hits and two walks and also hit a batter in seven innings on Saturday, and did not give up a run over 7 innings. When he is on, he is on. But when he is off, he is way off. Nate will start finding the right sequences to use his pitches sooner than later. He is also very close to taking the right turn into being where he wants to be. As long as Nate has more ups than downs, he will be ok.Fernando Rodney came in and got the save on Saturday night in Seattle after Jamie Walker and Rodney combined to retire the last six batters. Rodney is now 4 for 4 in save opportunies.
The bullpen is coming together now. For any team to be successful the need good pitching top to bottom. They are much improved early on this year and they will be heavily relied on as well. Now, can the hitting back them up. Can Shelton stay hot and Monroe lead the in RBI again? We will see. It is very early in the season, but the signs all point in the right direction.
