How's this for a headline:
Al Ahli coach apologises for starting to undress.
During a game between Al Ahli and Haras el-Hodoud (I am so glad I don't need to pronounce either of those names) on Friday, Manual Jose, the coach of Egyptian and African champions Al Ahli was tossed for removing his jacket and starting to unbutton his shirt to protest a referee's decision.
(If I ever get a job writing about sports, especially baseball, I am definitely going to follow the lead from the above link and use the word "expelled" any time a manager is removed from the game. It sounds much more bad-ass than "tossed" or "ejected", for some reason.)
In most places, the threat of partial male nudity wouldn't be all that big a deal - I still have a vivid recollection of Nashua Pride manager Butch Hobson punctuating a vehement argument by tearing off his uniform top and undershirt and spiking them onto home plate in the single greatest managerial performance I have witnessed this side of Joe Mikulik - but apparently they frown upon that sort of thing in Cairo, where the game was played, a difference in culture touched upon by Portugal native Jose in his official statement on the incident:
"After analyzing my reaction...I found out that it was inappropriate and I apologize to all fans in general and to Al Ahli's fans in particular...I forgot at that moment that I was in a country whose traditions are a little different than my country."
Translation: Sorry about that. In Portugal, everybody runs around half-naked. That's just how we roll. But seriously, I'll do what I can to keep my clothes on in the future.
