Out of the Phone Booth and Into the Spotlight
Feb 19, 2008 | 4:10PM | report this

I've been trying for the last few months to get the nickname "the Hammer" stuck on Dwight Howard, but that's over now. Make no mistake, Dwight Howard is Superman.

We've just gotten the first iconic moment in a career that promises to be full of them. On a night when he actually had two better dunks, the Superman Dunk will be remembered for the way Howard galvanized the crowd and put on display just how freakish an athlete he is. Whatever you think about the dunk/non-dunk (yes, I know he didn't really dunk it), it was a stunning display of athleticism, and it had the rest of the All-Stars going nuts.

In case you missed it guys, the dunk contest is back. The only contests that immediately come to mind as being as good as this one are the original ABA Dr. J vs David "Skywalker" Thompson, MJ vs. Dominique and Vince Carter completely blowing everyone away in 2000.

Jamario Moon and Rudy #### actually had some really quality dunks, but nobody noticed because Green and Howard set the bar so high. Rudy's first dunk  was basically the same as the 2nd dunk that Jordan threw down in that '88 contest, only Rudy finished with just his left hand, and his second dunk was similar to Green's dunk from last year, only with a higher degree of difficulty. Moon's left-handed free throw line dunk was extremely impressive, only he sabotaged himself by setting the tape up. Just think what he might have been able to do if he'd practiced that dunk.

Green's cupcake dunk was mind-blowing and incredibly entertaining, but suffered the same problem that Howard's Sticker Dunk did last year, the judges just couldn't see it properly. Great dunk and great showmanship though, that's one that people will remember for a while. The barefoot dunk was great, but he would've been better off combining that with the lob over the backboard. He suffered from doing two similar dunks back-to-back.

However, the night belonged to Howard, who did things that big men  just aren't supposed to be able to do. For his first dunk, he basically took what Andre Iguadola did, then added an insane degree of difficulty by tossing the ball himself and then finishing with a left-handed windmill. Um...wow. The Superman Dunk was so ridiculous that I can't get over it. To see a guy that big jump that high and then just throw the ball down into the basket...just awesome. He had everybody in the building on their feet in disbelief. His third dunk, to me, was the most impressive. To be able to catch a ball off the bounce with your left hand, tap it off the backboard, then catch it with your right hand and stuff it through is just an awesome display of athleticism and coordination. For a 7-foot center to be able to do that? Unreal. We throw the term "freak" around a lot in sports when describing athleticism, but Dwight Howard truly is a freak. He's like something from another planet...you might even say he's like "The Man of Tomorrow".

I agree, I liked Jamario Moon's dunk a great deal!

That was a fun dunk contest.

I wonder what other costume inspired dunks we may see in the future.

Spiderman shooting silly strings as he flies?

Batman would have to rappel from the ceiling?

How 'bout the hockey mask and chainsaw dunk?

That costume is more Wonder Woman.
Personally, green sock guy had my fave dunk.

If the judges didn't see the cupcake dunk properly, then it's time to get those old farts off the panel. No disrespect to the Doctor, Nique or Chocolate Thunder, but what was Malone doing up there?

Green had someone bring out the box, showed the cupcake, then had someone light it. What was so tough to see?

By the way, I had a friend personally attend the contest and he said he was out of his seat for the entire thing.

Dwight Howard's a manchild. Gabe finally got a draft choice right selecting him over Emeka. Thank goodness.

the judges knew Green brougt out a cupcake, but they didn't think he blew it out, and at first it looked like wind from his jumping blew it out.

After replay it was clear that he had blown it out, which would have gotten him a 50.

That dunk was not only my favorite of the night, but my favorite of all time. It wasn't just extremely difficult, it was also entertaining.

Top Dunks:
1 - The Birthday Cake Dunk
2 - Spudd Webb's off the ground, off the back board dunk
3 - Vince Carter's between the legs

I also really like JaMario, and i thought he had a good shot at winning it all, but the tape really screwed him over.

Great Post

Not to nitpick but Howard is only 6'11 not that it changes anything

I see Fox has taken PC to an all new level. Why is is that every tiime Rudy G.A.Y. from the Grizzlies is mentioned in a story, this website runs it as Rudy BLEEP. That is the most ridiculous thing I have every seen. FOX wake up and stop the PC madness.

The cupcake dunk was amazing IMO. Howard deserved to win because all of his dunks were great, but I'm still amazed at blowing out the candle.

Linclarry...I know what you mean with the PC ####, but you can click on the bleep and change your settings so they don't censore everything.

It wasn't a dunk. It was a "Throw".... Superman would have dunked it: ala MJ or Dr. J... Nice throw, no dunk !!!

A "Dunk" is when you actually come in contact with the rim with your wrist or hand. Howard's was not a "Dunk" people !!!!

Rev - It's easy to forget what a hard decision that was, that Okafor was the popular choice for #1. He was fresh off a national championship and no one knew if Dwight Howard was Kwame or Amare. Looks brilliant in retrospect though.

Vikings - I actually like Vince's 360-windmill better than the between the legs dunk. I also think Dwight's lefty tap dunk deserves to be listed with those, that dunk was incredible.

I only seen a quick highlite of Howards superman dunk. It looked as of he mis - judged his take off a little and came up short. He most likely has done it before in practice without a problem. I have not seen the candle dunk yet. Was this contest as good as everyone is claiming.
