Alrighty, we've got all our GMs assembled and we're ready to draft.
For those of you who didn't see my last post or didn't follow along with all the comments, here's how this is going to work.
We will have an 8-team, 7 round draft of all NBA players, past and present. From George Mikan or Paul Shirley, they're all available. The draft will be in a snake format, where the draft order is flipped each round. I won't set a time limit on picks, cause frankly I don't think we'll really need one and it isn't a particularly long draft, but if things start stretching out too much we can institute a limit to speed things up.
Once teams are made, I'll randomize a bracket, and we'll play a single elimination tournament to decide which team of legends is the best.
To decide the winner of each game, each GM will write a post explaining why his team is superior. You are allowed and, in fact, encouraged to read your opponent's argument and point out what you see as its flaws. Any and all fellow bloggers (not just the GMs in the competition, but anyone) may then vote on who they think the winner would be. The team with the most votes wins the game and moves on to the next round. (I was thinking that each GM would post his argument to his own blog, and I would link to them both and have people vote on a post on my blog, but it was suggested that the bloggers send their arguments to me and I just post them all on here. I guess it could work either way, anyone have thoughts or opinions on this?)
Players will be considered to be in their prime, though this does not mean you cannot use their whole careers in your argument. For example, even though it wasn't his best year, you could argue that Wilt obviously knew how to pass if he wanted to seeing as he once led the league in assists.
If you have any questions, make sure to ask and I'd be happy to answer.
Edit: DrMidnight is running commentary on this draft over on his blog. Make sure to check it out.
I said Melo was a more "pure" scorer than Kobe. By my definition there's a difference.
I think Bryant is the most explosive scorer in the game but I feel that's due more to his mentality and athletic ability than his basketball skill.
Carmelo Anthony is the "truth." Forget Paul Pierce. Melo can do it all offensively. He can post up, he can shoot the mid range and 3 point shot, and he can get to the hoop.
My top 3 scorers in the history of the game are as follows:
ace - I would've let you if I saw that earlier, but I asked a friend of mine who I know IRL to step in, so he's gonna take over.
As for getting the first pick, that's why I posted a screenshot of the randomizer results on the last blog. I'd also really rather not have the first pick, I typically prefer the 8-9 sandwich spot in this type of draft.
Iffman - Take off the last 5 years of Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor's career and he still has more points than the Stilt.
And Kobe's already got 10 years under his belt and he's near halfway to Jordan's point total. In order for Bean to up his PPG and total points scored past MJ, he may need to play 20 years.
So what's more impressive, scoring a lot in a smaller period of time, or being a scoring threat for a long career?
spidey, you mind if I switch your draft spot with
Seattle? I want to get this moving, but I still want to give him a chance to show up before I have to replace him.
edit: or Hoff, if either one of you guys would be willing to switch, we can move along a bit with this thing.

sry josh, I'm doing what I can to get this moving.
husker - don't think I didn't realize that people would say that. Not much I can do except tell you that I'd really rather not have that top spot, and that the way the draft is formatted placement isn't a huge deal.
Drinking a few beers and utilizing the pool, I just remembered this draft. I figured y'all would be waiting for me, but I'm relieved I'm not the one holding things up here. And thank goodness Sam Bowie and LaRue Martin are still available.
lol we should have set up a time for this and date lol .. the drafting could take a week lol plus it's the weekend .. hell i'll volunteer to go next ... magic johnson
yeah, I think we might have to set time slots for each pick. I'll see how things go tonight and work on how to do this, check back tomorrow at around noon and I'll have made any changes that I think are needed.
GR8 - looks like dehbashi showed up to take over for Seattle, so you can just stay in the #6 slot.
cav - sorry, but I wanted to go ahead and get this started. At least if I do this again, I'll have some of the kinks worked out :/.
My buddy wanted me to select Magic for him if he was still around and the pick got around to him. So Magic it is.
btw, if you any of you guys are waiting on the guy in front of you to pick and have to go somewhere, you can email me the guy you want and a backup in case the guy in front of you picks him, and I'll put the pick in if I'm around (I'm typically around a lot :P). Email is xphoenix12@juno.com
I was surprised too, I had him at #7 on my board. I also figured Josh would be taking Basketball Jesus, but he went with the other Boston legend instead.
xphoenix-I don't know how old you are, but I listed a top 15, so I could feel big time, like they do in the draft, and Duncan was nowhere close to that. We'll talk more later, after the draft.
I did add you to my favorites, though. This is kind of cool. And so were a few of your earlier ones. Hence, the favorite designation.
My email's in my bio if you ever want to talk basketball.
Oh who am I trying to kid. I'm game for talking any sport

ricko - I'm a bit biased, I'm huge Timmy fan. Love his game, love the way he carries himself, love his consistency. I still wouldn't have taken him #2, but I think he's tremendously underrated in a historical sense at this point in time.
With the 7th pick in the NBA Legends draft I will select a 3 time NCAA champion...5 time NBA champion...the league's all-time leading scorer...KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR!!!
you really cant go wrong with td .. no matter what the pick .. would i personally have picked him 2nd overall .. no lol but i can see where he was commin from cant argue with the numbers and titles he's won so far .. and he's still got plenty in the tank to get more so not THAT bad of a pick
