The Talladega Trifecta
Apr 24, 2008 | 9:55PM | report this

Well maybe the unpredictability of Talladega will be enough to slow Forensic2 down, whose score in the last 2 trifecti (a combined 8) would still be low enough to take any week so far this year and almost all of last year.  A job well done Forensic, I don’t know if we should chalk it up to experience or if you have been extremely lucky.  If this keeps up we are going to have to introduce some sort of NASCAR style rule to equalize the field.

This week I wanted to share a few more pictures with you and as well as the Trifecta maybe answer a little trivia question.

These pictures were taken quite a few years ago, when my brother and I went on our first major adventure to the south, to Talladega.  I was still young and a young NASCAR fan but the things we did see on this trip shaped the fan I have become. We stopped in Charlotte to see the shops.  At Hendrick motorsports we were able to walk right in to the race car shops and boy did our jaws drop when we went through the door of that non- descript, grey box, building.  This is what we saw.

This is actually three pictures from a point of view standing in the corner, sweeping 90 across the shop floor,  I have been to Hendrick more recently and boy has it changed, making this memory even sweeter.  We were invited in, to look closer at the car that my brother (the number 50 shirt) is standing beside and the car behind that one was the car they had raced at Martinsville with 3 days before. The back end sheet metal was all torn away and it was already being rebuilt.  It was pretty cool.

This one I have tried to post before is of our set up in the camping field.  We drove 20 hours in a chevette through the mountains.  We were young. The trip killed that car.

And this is the trivia question.  It was taken at Talladega, and is of a driver we followed up here in the northeast, racing on dirt for many years before this.  Do you know who it is? And what significance does Talladega hold for him?

And on with the Trifecta…it’s easy this week

First up, on Sunday at 8:00 am ET the Formula 1 cars launch in Spain at Catalunya.

Second the Sprint Cup parking lot races for restrictor plate supremacy at Talladega, starting at 1:00 pm ET

And the final race is the last we will hear the IRL cars as they go into hibernation until the Indianapolis 500 in the biggest weekend of the year for the Trifecta.   They are in Kansas and the race is scheduled to go at 5 pm ET.

Picks are due at 7:30 on Sunday morning and all the same penalties apply.  Good luck to all (although Forensic doesn’t need it, apparently) and thanks for your participation.

Wow.

Hey Will - What time zone are you in? I was looking for your trifecta on Thursday, and finally got too tired and turned off my computer at 11 pm CT. So today I didnt get here right away either.

I'll have to look at some old NASCAR books to figure out your trivia question.

f1- Jarno Trulli
cup - Jeff Gordon
IRL - Marco AAndretti

Good luck to all,and thanks William for the plug, Is there any way the extra points that I didn't use to win by, I can have back to use on this week?
LOL.

Lori - thanks for that heads up my dear. :) I will do the same to BeaverNut - dale has been picked already, so you will lose some points unless you change it. You never know some have won I think even taking the reduction ? William or anyone ?

Then again maybe we will need a ruling on this from the big boss, is this a infraction on Dave-In Indy for only putting Jr. Which Jr ? This could come down heavey on Dave I think. lol Dale E Jr ? or Martin Truex Jr ?

You don't see the humor in the fact that YOU picked Danica? Let's just say that wouldn't have been the driver I'd have expected you to pick.

i will give another hint later this evening

Negative on both counts. The first guy you are thinking of was the car owner (if you're thinking of who I think you are).

it's not andy hillenberg either, although hanahan noticed he was running hosier tires. (wow, i hadn't even noticed that but its true.) and this photo was taken during qualifying for the cup race, and i don't think he made the race that day. what i can say about him is a few years earlier at talladega (and this is the hint) he made mike mcdowell's qualifying crash look like a kiddie ride at the fair.

WW- once again, I am too late to pick anyone I even know of in IRL or F1! Wanted to tell you the pictures you posted were very cool of HMS! Loved the car you guys drove down in...and I have no idea who the trivia question is. Have fun you guys!

That'd be New Jersey's own Jimmy Horton, yes?

And he's the dude who flipped OVER the wall at Talladega (in a different numbered car - NOT the 80). I think folks will remember this crash (the lone safety truck at the top of the wall, with the safety guys looking over like "what the hell we supposed tuh do?").

Whether legend or not, he's reputed to have said something like "you know you're in trouble when the first person to get to you after a wreck is carrying a beer".

you got it... jimmy horton... congrats dave and to jjd (it would have been news if he didn't know) and hanahan did get it after the hint. he was a favourite of mine when he was making cup races, and is still fun to watch when we see him at syracuse in the fall. a couple of other dirt connections on that trip to talladega in 94 (i think that was the year) steve kinser won the iroc race that weekend and we were able to visit the dirt oval across the road and see red farmer go. a legend, and the only time i got to see him run.

as we sit we have only 1 penalty, that would be Dwindy1 with lewis hamilton...
BeaverNut---congrats on your "bonus pick"

and my picks are

f1 piquet
cup vickers
irl scheckter

for photo and kvalus, if you change your minds webber is still on the board in the f1 race, and foyt, roth and meira are avaialable on the irl end. folks all capable of a decent enough finish. dont be scared off by forensic, i believe he is beatable

Nope. I had all of my picks, leading with Hamilton, in my original post. Will's post was at 9:55, and my last edit (to add a line between the second and third pick) was complete at 10:17.

dont be scared off by forensic, i believe he is beatable. Why yes I am. I win 2 in a row and everyone is marking me ? If you only knew how I pick my drivers. Plus I wasn't the first few to pick this week, I was 8th and funny how I am 8 points back from leader in first race.

I will be doing a frame by frame on F1 crash Heikki in a few hours if not sooner. I thought I would help out in scores, if I got it right on how William gives the points out. I doing how much back they are from leader.

1. John 464 1
2. Hanahan -2
3. Dave -Indy -3 Also Dwindy with a - ?
4. JJ Dean -4
5. Forensic -8
6. Hotfootlori -9
7. BeaverNut. -14
8. Tez 99gm . -15
9. William -20

You have told everyone how I have been getting my picks from you and your dart board. I told you the check was/is in the mail for the last m2 weeks of picks. Go to your closet shore line and look for a coke bottle and you will find your check. You teased me saying you will tie JJ Dean for 3 wins in a row.

Well maybe we set a record for the lowest score of all time ?

I think Hanahan is this weeks winner, he needed the bomb shell in IRL to finish 10 or better I beleave. If so Congrads and you get the first round.

It's amazing how comfortable you get with a boring finish when it's your guy with the boring lead. Way to go Dannie!

I watched 2 of the 3 races (IndyCar and F1), and they weren't the best - but the results were fine by me.

HotfootLori - It's a hollow honor you hold this week, knowing that it was achievable only in Yeemum's absence.

And Hanahan - why did we know this would happen (mechanical problem or not)? Regardless, IndyCar's gonna get into a bidding war with NASCAR over her, talent or no; and they better win it (for their sake, and Danica's - if she thinks the pressure's great in Indycar, holy #$*! will break loose if she goes to NASCAR - ask Sam or last years Indy winner).

Starting to get a bit psyched for the Month of May in Indy.

congrats dave. not to toot my own horn, but the trifecta has that ability to add drama to the most boring race doesn't it. i didn't even realize that it would, until i found myself in the same situation a few weeks ago. looking back edwards had the thing in the bag at texas, but all i kept thinking about was how he blew it up in atlanta. anyway nice work and thanks to all who participate. we couldn't do it with out you.
