First off an official congratulations goes out to
HotfootLori, who fought her way through traffic to claim the “American Open
Wheel Becomes One Trifecta” last week. Her weekend started out mid-pack, after
the truck race, but steadily she moved up and in dramatic fashion, correctly
picked the winner of the cup race to leave all rivals in her dust. Well done Lori.
This week the Trifecta will touch the 3 major automobile
racing series’ and all races will take place on Sunday.
First Formula 1 visits the small desert island country of Bahrain. This is the first F1 race this year that will
roll off at a respectable time for us living in the eastern time zone, 7:00 AM.
In road course racing, as in golf, it is well known that the sand trap
is not the place to be. This weekend the
sand proves to be all around the track, which aside from being a hazard off the
course, can cause problems on the racing surface as the wind can blow sand on
it, making it exceedingly slick. Add in the removal of traction control and this
race could have fewer finishers than the Australian Grand Prix.
Second, scheduled to go off at 1:30pm ET is the Sprint cup race from Texas.
Last but not least is the street course race for the IRL
being held in Saint Petersburg Florida.
It starts at 2:30pm ET. Maybe a
street course will give an advantage to some of the old CART drivers. It appears to me that the course has
undergone some reconstruction, and will encompass a little of the small air
port there. Does anyone know when this
construction was done? Last year
already? Google Earth pictures show it
still under construction.
As you can see really like Google Earth. It’s like going on vacation when you are on
your computer. Very cool stuff. You can even make out the graders and
construction equipment in Florida. You can even see the old start finish line on the road. Very cool indeed.
All the same rules apply for this week, but if we get more
than 15 people playing I will waive the penalties for double picks in both open
wheel events.
DAMN IT! I used to be good at getting my picks in early ...
F1 - Lewis of course, but he's already picked - if you don't pick early in F1 - you're doomed to a 5 pt. penalty. OK - NICK HEIDFELD (feel pretty good about this one, points wise - given I would suck up 5 pts. for picking Lewis even if he won).
CUP - Was going to pick Harvick - thanks Yee; o.k. - KENSETH.
INDYCAR - Castroneves and Dixon were my first picks. MARCO ANDRETTI strikes me as another good pick - and I'll go with him as he's the only one not yet picked by anyone else - would be nice to see him finish a race well for once (but did his Dad ever do that?).

The real winners will be the ones who watch racing, whatever its form. This may be the last NASCAR race I watch if I am left with the feelings I have been on the first 5 races. I can't watch a series where the competition has been surgically removed.

F1 - Nico Rosberg (based on his past efforts here)
Cup - Kasey Kahne (based on his 1.5 mile track form of '06)
Indycar - Will Power (based on his kicka*** CC street form of '07 coupled with with no Seabass)
edit; hey Lori, what happened to picking Glock? :P
okay- i've been hard at work all day and complete chaos has broken out here.
here are the folks that are standing in the penalty so far
noahspop2001____-10 f1 and irl
Dave_in_Indy____-10 f1 and irl
BeaverNut_______-10 irl and cup
if you pick a driver already choosen, you will reciev a 5 point penalty.
i guess no one knows about the reconfigured circuit in florida??
Dwindy1- snow is almost gone
i have heard seabass, seba and bus as short forms of sebastian,
INDYCAR - instead of Marco, I'll pick (drum roll) JUSTIN WILSON. Was between Justin and Ryan Hunter Reay. Think Newman Haas will get the new car sorted out, and Justin Wilson is a better driver. My real pick is Scott Dixon - but I'll gamble on a better than 6th place finish for Justin ...
F1 - I'll pick FRED (whatever car he's driving). Fred is due for a great race, but may have pissed off his team too much - for all I know he's already been replaced. But if he races, ... he'll do better than 6th. Massa would have been my pick otherwise.
um sorry to inform you beaver, but nico has been taken and for some reason i didn't notice but danica has been taken a couple of times as well. it would be real nice to see jamie do well again though.
has anyone seen footage of hamilton losing it? i have seen photos of the damage, i wonder how hard of a hit it was and if there was anyone else involved?

wow that was close. my computer wasn't letting my add a comment. i thought you were all going to have to do it with out me. anyway here are my picks
F1- mark webber
irl- graham rahal
cup- carl edwards, no one ever picks him
oh ya, and tez your right, that q was awesome to watch. pol on pole. slowly slowly its turning from a 4 car league to a 6 car league. its what has made f1 so intriguing to me these last few years.

Fred looked strong in the first few laps until Lewis punted him from behind. ... kids. Had the real winner called though ... (Massa).
Were the IndyCar trials on TV yesterday? They showed the GT car race at St. Pete immediately before the quals, but - at least here in Indy - didn't show the new format qualifications.
Regardless, I feel even better about my pick now (Justin Wilson). Looking forward to watching the race.
lewis just didn't look interested did he. i give fred lots of greif, but i must say hes crushing his stablemate (although hes a rookie)
here are your standings after the first race
IndyCar started in St. Pete when the NASCAR race was already on lap 50 (~1/6 of the way into the race). There were still 120 laps left in the NASCAR race after the IndyCar race was over.
Have I ever mentioned before that NASCAR RACES DON'T HAVE TO ALL BE 4 OR 5 HOURS LONG to be entertaining? ... oh, ... sorry to be redundant - but it's SO true.
Boo-yaaa! I wouldn't doubt you could hear me where ever you are in the world. i was so close to giving up on making my picks and throwing my computer in the lake. but i got it working and just in time, and its worth repeating (thanks for noticing Dave_in_Indy)I made my picks 14th. just so y'all know. thanx for making my weekend everyone... your winner is

congrats, Will! Was the Indy race a good one? I heard it was a wet/dry one so I was rather peeved that I didn't tape it instead of the Cup race, lol
well, guess our next challenge is to see who can get the perfect score first....last year we sucked at picking the Cup winner and we've seemed to have sorted that out now :)
thnx guys, tez the race was shown tape delayed here (in the true north strong and free), so i was flipping between it and wind tunnel(a racing show on speed tv). it was okay, but for a couple of cautions and the fact that it turned into a "timed event" and didn't make it the scheduled distance. i didn't see the rain to dry transition though. funny thing, i was scanning the results to see where graham had finished, and at first couldn't find him because i wasn't looking at the top of the list.
Congrats William! You did a great job for picking last, lol. I wouldnt even have thought of picking Graham Rahal for the IRL, being that he is just starting in the series.
I'm not up to speed though on F1 this year. So my guesses there have been strickly that...guesses (based on what I remembered from last year). I am having fun with your weekly Trifecta though!
Congratulatio ns to Dave_in_Indy winning the Great Canadian Trifecta on June 10 2007. His blog "A Partially Able Mind" is a collage of sports info and a must for anyone interested in the Indianapolis 500 or the IRL. Congratulatio ns to JayJayDean, winner of the 2007 MonsterMile Trifecta on June 05, 2007. He has a great blog analyzing NASCAR's points system called JJD's NASCAR and other stuff blog. Congrats need to go out to 14Falcons, the 2007 winner of the Memorial Day weekend Trifecta. Every race fan needs to check out his blog, Kierkegaard's Stages. As for me, i am just another racing fan, from Canada, with opinions like every one else. other than racing i love Dave Matthews Band, playing guitar and all sports in general. favorite drivers include Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, and Dale Jarret. favorite sports teams are Toronto Raptors, Montreal Canadiens, Notre-dame football, Chicago Bears, Syracuse basketball.
